Position Overview 

If you like to troubleshoot hardware, solve complex problems, and provide technical solutions, this is the role for you. As a Field Service Engineer, you’ll work at one of our state-of-the-art facilities or at a customer site, where you will be the face of Applied Materials and an integral part of a vibrant and diverse team. Your primary role will be to ensure the successful implementation, operation, and maintenance of Applied Materials’ products and/or services for our customers.

We train our Field Service Engineers to support the technology that the world relies on every day to manufacture semiconductor chips and related materials. You’ll work in partnership with customers to install, maintain and upgrade their Applied Materials equipment, delivering world-class support for multimillion-dollar production systems. Our digital tools and technology, like Microsoft Windows Mixed Reality (or MR) technology, allow you to interface with our network of experts globally to solve problems faster.

Key Responsibilities 

  • Assist senior field service engineers with installing, maintaining, and upgrading leading-edge customer equipment

  • Learn and apply basic diagnostic techniques to test equipment and resolve technical problems with assistance from senior field service engineers

  • Complete required safety and compliance training, adhere to company policies and procedures and follow all Intellectual Property guidelines

  • Ability to work both independently and with a team

  • Display a professional demeanor and respect for others, both within Applied and at customer sites

  • Strive to perform Applied Materials’ established best practices

  • Demonstrate a culture of ethical conduct, safety and compliance

  • Satisfy the company’s and customer’s on-site requirements, including safety, environmental and COVID-19 guidelines

World-Class Training 

Your journey with Applied begins in our Field Service Engineer Development Program, where you will experience a blended learning environment and expanded networking opportunities. The Field Service Engineer role is an opportunity to start at the heart of the semiconductor industry with the opportunity for broad career growth. Your quick exposure to Applied Materials’ tools and technologies, internal operations and customer requirements can lead to future opportunities including senior field service roles, technical program management, to name a few.

Your 4-month training rotation will begin at the heart of Applied Material’s Manufacturing in Austin, TX.  You will meet with your FSO New College Graduate Cohort and begin your training, starting with basic safety and workmanship training.  You will then travel to one of Applied Materials' state-of-the-art training facilities to receive hands-on training.  Hardware Training may be at an international or domestic facility, depending on business needs, and will be assigned after onboarding.  Once your training is complete, you will head to your “home site,” where you will work side-by-side with your new team to complete your Customer Engineer Certification.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Manufacturing, Data Science, Aerospace, Biomedical, or related field

  • A willingness to learn and interpret electrical and mechanical schematics

  • Ability to diagnose and resolve basic technical problems

  • Clear and effective written and verbal communications skills

  • Strong interpersonal skills with an emphasis on building trust 

  • Proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite (Excel, Word, and PowerPoint) 

  • Valid driver’s license and ability to obtain a passport

  • Flexible, adaptable, growth mindset

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Basic mechanical aptitude and knowledge in any of the following: pneumatics, hydraulics, electronics, vacuum, or thermodynamics

  • Knowledge of hand tools and proper usage, including a digital multimeter

  • Ability to read electrical and mechanical schematics is a plus

  • Ability to explain technical or sensitive information and work to build consensus 

Work Environment 

This is a physically demanding position that often requires extensive walking, standing for extended periods of time, working in tight spaces, bending, squatting, twisting, kneeling, reaching, climbing stairs and ladders, lifting up to 35 lbs., the ability to distinguish between colors, the ability to work in an environment with noise that may be difficult for some individuals with sensitivity to noise, and the use of hand and power tools.

Additionally, because this position generally involves working in a clean room, it requires the use of appropriate Personal Protective Equipment such as coveralls, hoods, booties, safety glasses, gloves, respirators, chemical aprons, and face shields.

Our Field Service Engineers work on 8-to-12-hr shifts to ensure our customers have ongoing support.  Travel will be based on business needs; candidates must be willing to travel up to 20% of the time to locations both international and domestic. 

Work Environment

U.S. Salary Range:

$30.50 - $41.80

The salary offered to a selected candidate will be based on multiple factors including location, hire grade, job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and with consideration of internal equity of our current team members. In addition to a comprehensive benefits package, candidates may be eligible for other forms of compensation such as participation in a bonus and a stock award program, as applicable.

For all sales roles, the posted salary range is the Target Total Cash (TTC) range for the role, which is the sum of base salary and target bonus amount at 100% goal achievement.
