Job Title: Applied Performance Scientist
Job Summary: Under the direction of the Performance Science Manager, the Applied Performance Scientist will assist in developing, supporting, and improving performance science processes and systems across departments within Baseball Operations. A successful candidate for this role must be able to work collaboratively and effectively across multiple subdisciplines. Preference will be given to candidates with a strong background in exercise science, physiology, and/or biomechanics, coupled with experience providing performance solutions to competitive athletes as part of as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Position Accountabilities/Responsibilities:
- Support a comprehensive athlete monitoring system, including routine and project-based data collection, technical maintenance, troubleshooting, test selection, staff training, and system design
- Conduct internal medical & performance research and assist with Performance Science project initiatives and collaborative efforts across departments within Player Development and Baseball Operations
- Contribute to the creation and enhancement of current data visualizations and reporting tools
- Aid with the identification, evaluation and selection of novel performance science tools and systems
- Help equip coaches to better leverage and integrate quantitative tools and techniques into player development
Position Qualifications, Skills, and Experience Required:
- Bachelor’s degree in related field; postgraduate degree/training in a sport science discipline
- Strong explicit and tacit knowledge of monitoring training and performance in competitive athletes
- Knowledge and proficiency in applied health and performance science research methods and statistics
- Experience utilizing performance technology; knowledge of baseball-specific tools
- Strong organizational skills, intellectual curiosity, stress tolerance, the ability to handle uncertainty, and adept at driving projects to completion
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills; Spanish competency is an asset
Qualifications:
- Proficiency in computer programming and tools (R, SQL, GitHub, etc.)
- Applied physiology and/or biomechanics experience in a competitive sport environment, including familiarity with baseball
- Relevant certification/licensure as a sports performance practitioner (CPSS, CSCS, etc.)
Physical Requirements:
- This position will be based out of the Royals’ Surprise Complex (Surprise, AZ), with possible travel to the Royal’s affiliates and/or external sites, as directed
- Ability to lift items weighing as much as 40 pounds
- Must be able to work in a seated position for extended periods of time
- Must be able to be productive utilizing a computer keyboard and telephone
- Must be able to be productive in a work environment where the noise level can be high at times
- Specific vision abilities include close vision and ability to adjust focus
- Must be comfortable walking to navigate the facility to access the office, concourse, etc.
- Must be able to work extended hours and/or weekends/holidays as required by deadlines and event scheduling
