Automation and Controls Engineer - Industrial Machinery
Job DescriptionJob Description
Senior Automation and Controls Engineer Join an Ambitious, Venture-Backed Startup Transforming Global Resource Exploration!
Opportunity Summary:
We're a highly ambitious, pre-seed startup funded by top-tier VCs, dedicated to revolutionizing resource exploration and security through cutting-edge automation technology. Our mission is simple yet bold: remove the constraints of raw material scarcity by innovating in mineral discovery and exploration technologies. We're searching for a passionate Senior Automation and Controls Engineer who will be integral in building our first of intelligent, autonomous drilling equipment. This role provides an exciting opportunity to shape foundational technology in a dynamic startup environment, offering significant autonomy, rapid growth potential, and global impact.
About Us:
At our core, we're transforming how humanity locates and extracts essential materialsfrom electronics to infrastructurethrough automated exploration technology. Traditional mineral exploration methods haven't evolved significantly in decades, relying heavily on costly, manual processes. We're building a new breed of autonomous drilling platforms featuring advanced real-time analytics, sensor integration, and sophisticated automation controls. By making exploration safer, faster, and more precise, we aim to be a cornerstone of the future global supply chain.
Job Duties:
- Develop, test, and deploy robust PLC-driven control systems for autonomous drilling rigs and related equipment (sample extraction, material handling).
- Integrate diverse sensors (including positional, pressure, force, temperature) and precision actuators to facilitate real-time data collection and accurate operational control under challenging environmental conditions.
- Implement robust, safety-rated electrical designs and control software to safeguard personnel, machinery, and surrounding environments.
- Design intuitive, user-friendly HMIs and SCADA interfaces to streamline rig monitoring, control, and troubleshooting.
- Collaborate closely with software, robotics, and mechanical teams to align automation solutions with broader product design objectives.
- Perform rapid prototyping, thorough testing, troubleshooting, and system validation in both controlled lab environments and rigorous field conditions.
Qualifications:
- 5+ years of hands-on experience in developing, deploying, and troubleshooting automation systems (PLCs, servos, robotics).
- Expertise in at least one major PLC ecosystem (such as Siemens, Allen-Bradley, Beckhoff TwinCAT) and competency in structured text, ladder logic, or state machine programming.
- Demonstrated experience integrating servo drives, VFDs, safety systems, and emergency-stop circuits.
- Proficient understanding of industrial network systems (EtherCAT, Ethernet/IP, Profinet) for distributed I/O control and real-time data handling.
- Knowledge of industry standards for electrical installations (UL508A, NFPA, NEC) particularly applicable to rugged or hazardous environments.
- Comfort with field-based system commissioning, validation, and ongoing performance optimization.
Experience:
- Experience working with industrial robotic systems (such as ABB, Fanuc, or KUKA).
- Prior exposure to demanding outdoor or remote operating environments.
- Experience in rapid prototyping and iterative development methodologies.
