Corporate automation engineer. You would be the go to Automation Engineering Subject Matter expert integrating automation into their injection molding, Blow Molding and Thermoforming plants. Improving their efficiencies, managing all new automation projects, recommending best practices, machine qualification and justification for automation / robotics. The position would start as individual contributor but grow to manage plant automation teams of techs or engineers. Purpose and Scope
This position will be responsible for automation and control systems design, specifications, programming and simulation of processing equipment and machines. The Automation Engineer will provide technical lead and will be involved with Plant and Corporate Management activities providing start-up and testing assistance of new equipment or projects. Technical lead duties will include installation, continuous improvement and support of equipment, developing and implementing equipment procedures with key team members, such technical operators, engineers, plant management, corporate management, maintenance, and customers. The Automation Engineer will be able to collect task data, create project schedules and track their progress while maintaining updated status reports. This does have some travel to their 4 main US manufaturing sites but not extensive.
Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities
- Develop test plans for automation equipment, applying knowledge of engineering technology.
- Program and troubleshoot new and existing systems and equipment.
- Design quality, engineered solutions that meet plant’s needs, monitor budget constraints and allow for efficient manufacturing process.
- Maintain awareness and control project cost, quality, scope and schedule to ensure on time delivery of projects within internal budgets.
- Participate in design reviews, as required and requested by Management.
- Conduct R & D activities concerned with integration and testing of electronic/mechanical components and systems and in development of applications.
- Apply mechanical theory, mechanical testing procedures and related knowledge to layout, build, test, troubleshoot, repair and modify developmental and production equipment.
- Works with maintenance department to ensure preventative and predictive maintenance compliance.
- Program software to configure and/or make modifications to automated systems and process control systems, which will include maintaining a backup library of robotic, PLC and other instrumentation software
- Provide various (daily, weekly, monthly) status reports of progress for various COMPANY management members.
- Evaluate, select and coordinate with outside vendors for design, machining and fabrication of tooling and systems.
Education and Experience
- AS or BS in Mechanical, Engineering Technology, automation or manufacturing or related field.
- Min of 3 years experience with automation, electrical and mechanical design and fabrication.
- Hydraulics, robotics, electrical systems, automation, machine maintenance, installation/repair assistance and high speed manufacturing fundamentals; Stamping, welding and palletizing a plus.
Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Strong MS Office, Visio, Inventor, Project software.
- Able to create detailed reports, presentations and documents.
- Knowledge with Allen Bradley PLC (programming and strong understanding of logic), robotics, industrial sensors and pneumatic systems.
- Coordinating multiple projects, priorities and resources simultaneously in a fast paced manufacturing environment.
