Located in San Diego, CA, we are seeking a Building Automation Controls Technician skilled in managing and optimizing building management systems. This position involves installing, programming, testing, calibrating, operating, servicing, and repairing control systems and their related software, hardware, and equipment. You will be responsible for troubleshooting issues quickly to minimize disruptions to operations and carrying out various technical duties related to the electrical, mechanical, instrumentation, and control functions of the utility systems. The role demands a deep understanding of HVAC and control systems and proficiency in addressing both routine maintenance and complex system challenges to ensure the efficient and optimal functioning of sophisticated building management installations.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Manage service calls while maintaining and enhancing client relations.
  • Perform preventative maintenance and respond to emergency service calls on existing BMS systems.
  • Independently troubleshoot and rectify system deficiencies.
  • Communicate effectively with clients to assess and meet service needs, ensuring high satisfaction and proper scheduling.
  • Monitor and optimize building systems to maintain performance standards.
  • Update and fine-tune systems to integrate new programs and sequences.
  • Identify and implement system enhancements, upgrades, or retrofits.
  • Conduct building surveys and collaborate on estimates for additional work with the Service Manager.
  • Perform software programming, equipment startups, system tuning, calibration, and commissioning.
  • Manage various equipment including VAVs, Exhaust Fans, Unit Vents, AHUs, Hot Water Systems, Chiller Water Systems, and Lighting.
  • Stay updated on industry trends and energy-saving strategies.
  • Provide feedback to improve service delivery and installation processes.

Skills & Qualifications:

  • Field Experience: Experience in the HVAC controls industry, DDC systems commissioning, software integration, operation, calibration, and pneumatic controls.
  • : Associate degree in HVAC or Electronics, or Bachelors degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering.
  • Technical Proficiency: Knowledge of Automated Logic commissioning tools and field circuit debugging skills. Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, WebCTRL, AutoCAD, and various operating systems.
  • Certifications: Manufacturer certifications such as Niagara AX, N4, Alerton, Distech, or similar are highly desirable.
  • Industry Knowledge: Understanding of the construction industry, particularly the mechanical and electrical sectors.
  • Blueprint Literacy: Ability to read and understand mechanical and electrical drawings.
  • Communication and Organizational Skills: Strong communication, with excellent organizational and documentation skills.
  • Project Management: Proven track record of completing projects, being self-motivated, and achieving customer satisfaction.

Position Levels:

  • Level 1 Technician: Capable of handling most responsibilities with minimal supervision, focusing on applying technical skills effectively.
  • Level 2 Technician: Achieves all objectives of Level 1 and provides mentoring to junior technicians. This level involves autonomous management of tasks and client relations.
  • Senior Technician: Possesses extensive experience and advanced technical knowledge in building system programming, integration, and complex HVAC control strategies. Leads projects and guides strategic enhancements in building management practices.
