Location – Newcastle

Job Purpose – Commercial Manager


The Commercial Manager collaborates and works with all other business functions, across a range of activities, to ensure that the commercial aspects of new business opportunities, and existing contracts are quantified and controlled so that risk, compliance and value is managed and assured for the business.

To lead and provide effective support relating to Commercial, Contract, Bid, Export, Import and Security activities as defined by our internal and external customers. Ensure that legal and compliance requirements are met as they relate to company products and business areas.

Provide risk and commercial advice during the bid and project lifecycle to assess performance and provide support to the wider business.

Ensure suitable prospect governance is in place.

To establish good working relationships with Business Development, Projects, Engineering and Finance. Support the commercial team’s business improvement initiatives


Key Responsibilities – Commercial Manager


Reporting to the Commercial Director, responsibilities will include:

  • Commercial lead for all allocated product and spares enquiries.
  • Management of commercial aspects relating to the receipt, preparation and response to all allocated product and spares enquiries.
  • Negotiation and drafting of contract terms and conditions.
  • Develop and manage customer framework agreements to improve the efficiency of the contracting cycle.
  • of bid pricing in line with business winning strategies, policies and procedures.
  • Management of allocated contract acceptance activities.
  • Work closely with the nominated Bid Manager and Business Support Manager to lead on all commercial issues associated with the of a coherent proposal.
  • of allocated product and spares prices, maintenance of price history and associated data
  • Participate and complete customer requested price justifications with appropriate levels of information leading to agreement.
  • Maintain associated Commercial Department records and update databases.
  • Support the control of information & parts received from the USA – ITAR. •
  • Management and negotiation of all Agreements including but not limited to NDAs, Loan Agreements and MOUs.
  • Support the control and authorisation of all imports and exports.
  • Development of tools and procedures to enhance Departmental performance.
  • Attend ad hoc UK and overseas external meetings as required.
  • Attend ad hoc training courses, seminars and briefings.
  • Perform miscellaneous duties as directed by the Commercial Director in support of performance objectives of the department.
  • Other related duties as assigned.


Qualifications/Skills/Experience – Commercial Manager

  • A Business Management, Economics or Law degree is advantageous or equivalent in a relevant discipline.
  • Experience in working within the military industry as a Commercial Manager.
  • Familiar with military prime contractors and business to government sales. Comfortable with working with a wide variety of cultural backgrounds and foreign contracts.
  • Experience gained in a military sales commercial role based on the creation of commercially sound proposals and the execution of contract acceptance procedures.
  • Familiar with US FARs and DFARs.
  • Familiar with the export of military controlled goods and ITAR.
  • An appreciation of import regulations and controls.
  • The ability to understand and negotiate appropriate contracts on a consistent basis is essential.
  • The ideal candidate is an experienced professional with knowledge of Commercial Department best practices and a high attention to detail.
  • A sound business acumen is essential, and an understanding of commercial principles is required, underpinned by good analytical, numerate and interpretive skills.
  • The ability to perform well against agreed timelines, in a team environment and to demonstrate good people skills.
  • Ability to manage an ongoing workload with agreed variations on priorities.
  • Must also be able to operate day-to-day with little direct supervision and to make timely, rational decisions when necessary.
  • Confident in an external and internal customer facing environment with the ability to generate enthusiasm and have a can-do attitude.
  • Experience of working with commercial process and procedures and a proficiency in working with MS Office suite.
  • Experience in using Access Databases is desirable.
