Construction Inspector - Heavy Civil

Minimum Required Qualifications:

  • A minimum of five (5) years of field experience inspecting roadway projects with knowledge of roadways, grading, drainage, storm drain and channels, earthwork, grading, cast-in-place concrete, retaining walls, traffic control and electrical
  • Valid California Class C driver’s license
  • Able to obtain Cal-OSHA/OSHA 30-hour training certification prior to work

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or another related field with one (1) year of experience on a construction project
  • Have a minimum of 5 years freeway inspection experience on Caltrans projects

Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Inspects each stage of construction up to completion
  • Interprets plans, specifications, and codes and verifies contract work is performed in accordance with all applicable governing codes and regulations
  • Monitors construction sites for safety violations
  • Prepares Non-Conformance Reports when work is not performed to the approved standards
  • Maintains daily activity logs and reports with photographs, in a manner agreed to by LACMTA prior to the work
  • Review or prepare interim progress reports for contractor payments
  • Monitors contractor-testing activities
  • Prepares reports on labor, material, and equipment on site
  • Determines construction conforms to plans and specifications
  • Conducts quality surveillance of specific quality related activities as necessary
  • Assist in maintaining, supporting, and promoting a safe work environment while complying with Caltrans and LACDPW’s safety rules, policies, and procedures
  • Provide Construction Safety and Security field services, as directed, including but not limited to Site Safety and Security Reviews including for Construction Equipment, Personnel, Work Procedures and Traffic Control
  • Coordinate preparation of inspection survey reports, cost estimates and maintenance records; as well as, timely submittals of these reports and records
  • Arranges, coordinates, and oversees technical inspections such as electrical, landscaping, soil testing, concrete, and asphalt mixes, and reinforcing steel for conformance to specification requirements
  • Ability to assist the Geotechnical Engineer or the Engineering Management Support Services Contractor in the collecting, interpreting, analyzing, and presenting geotechnical and survey monitoring data
  • Coordinates laboratory activities and compares verifications test results with result from Contractor’s laboratory
  • May allocate inspection resources and supervise inspectors also qualified to meet the duties above
  • Other job-related duties as assigned
