We are seeking an experienced and innovative Automation Controls Engineer to join our Engineering team. The successful candidate will play a critical role in designing, developing, and implementing control systems for our custom machinery. The Automation Controls Engineer will use machine specifications to create electric and pneumatic control schematics for new and existing systems, as well as the PLCs and HMIs for industrial mechanical and servo-based machinery. This position will work alongside other engineers in the development, installation and troubleshooting of industrial machinery automation both via remote connection and in person. The Controls Engineer will assist in creating on-line technical manuals, documentation and supporting the field technicians during the assembly and commissioning of equipment in a fascinating industry.

Responsibilities:

  • Work with mechanical engineers for the interface and installation of PLC and embedded control-based hardware and software systems.
  • Prepare equipment drawings and documentation and supervise the implementation.
  • Perform the set-up, calibration, design testing and troubleshooting of circuits, components and instruments.
  • Develop and document new PLC control systems from concept to installation.
  • Partner with other engineers and Operations team members to ensure equipment is meeting expectations and producing desired outcomes.
  • Understand process control issues, developing control solutions to improve outcomes.
  • Analyze and recommend changes to equipment for improvements in performance and cost reduction.
  • Develop project requirements, preparing project specifications, cost estimates and justification.
  • Maintain configuration control of current PLC source code.
  • Support training initiatives on new installations and develop standard operating procedures.
  • Provide technical support to the field technicians for all manufacturing builds during the assembly and commissioning of equipment.
  • Assist in creation of technical manuals and process documentation.
  • Stay abreast of the latest technology and techniques to provide designs that are competitive and cost-effective.

Required Qualifications and Skills:

  • BSEE or equivalent.
  • 2 - 5 years of electrical design engineering experience.
  • Experience with food processing or packaging equipment but not required.
  • Experience programming Allen Bradley PLCs with an emphasis on efficient and effective code design and commenting.
  • Servo motor experience including sizing, programming, troubleshooting, and tuning as well as electrical noise control and torque limiting techniques.
  • Experience with cam profiles for motion control including analysis, creation, and modification of cam profiles and motion studies on both mechanical and virtual profiles.
  • Understanding of electrical design of industrial machine controls ranging from 110 to 480 VAC including power distribution, fuse/breaker selection, surge suppression, and short circuit current capacity.
  • Ability to design, modify, and troubleshoot pneumatic systems including calculations for flow, consumption, and filtration requirements.
  • Experience with PID control and tuning.
  • Use of 2D CAD to create accurate electrical and pneumatic schematics.
  • Interest in design, fabrication and troubleshooting of high-speed machinery.
  • Analytical problem-solving skills and strong understanding of physics (F=ma, position, velocity and acceleration equations).
  • Work well in a team environment with excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to produce clear and concise operating instructions and documentation.
  • Familiar with applicable codes and regulations (e.g. NFPA 70 & 79, UL).
  • Candidate must be thorough and accurate with excellent time management and organization skills.
