Controls Engineer
Job DescriptionJob DescriptionAutomation company specializes in designing and building custom automated assembly, testing, and special process equipment for a variety of industries.
Responsibilities:
- Analyze customer specifications, product drawings, and related documentation to develop optimal control solutions that meet or exceed requirements.
- Design controls architecture for complex systems integrating pneumatic, cam, and servo-driven components.
- Collaborate with electrical designers to ensure successful implementation of designs.
- Support mechanical engineering to align mechanical and electrical control systems.
- Research and select robust, cost-effective components and subsystems that meet design requirements.
- Participate in internal and customer design reviews, as well as customer buy-offs.
- Diagnose and resolve mechanical or electrical system issues with the project team.
- Document and communicate scope changes that may impact project cost or timeline.
- Provide time estimates and scheduling updates related to controls design tasks.
- Communicate with customers, internal teams, and vendors on technical project details.
- Travel nationally and internationally to customer sites for installation, troubleshooting, or servicing of equipment, sometimes on short notice.
Qualifications & Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent experience.
- 5+ years of experience designing and integrating control systems for custom automation.
- Proficient in Allen Bradley PLCs, HMIs, servo controls, and machine vision systems (e.g., Cognex, Keyence).
- Experience configuring and programming remote I/O devices (e.g., Ethernet IP, Modbus).
- Skilled in programming safety and non-safety PLCs and HMIs.
- Robot programming experience with Fanuc, Yaskawa, ABB, Universal, or Kuka is a plus.
- Strong problem-solving, analytical reasoning, and debugging skills.
- Experience with analog/digital systems; C++ proficiency is a plus.
- Familiarity with integrating instrumentation or lab equipment into automated systems for precise testing is a plus.
- Exceptional organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to meet deadlines and budgets.
- Strong verbal, written, listening, and presentation communication skills.
