Summary: The Controls Engineer has a key role on the manufacturing team. The successful Controls Engineer is motivated, innovative, and enthusiastic about configuring, building, and supporting capital equipment. A well-rounded background is needed to balance the mechanical, electrical, and manufacturing components of this role. Excellent technical skills as well as a keen understanding of machine safety and guarding are required. The implementation of robust system architecture across multiple platforms and custom control system solutions for customers in various end-of-line packaging applications will be required.
Job Responsibilities:
- Utilize experience and knowledge of PLC programming, HMI programming, control, and electrical systems to standardize and improve current systems.
- Working in cross-functional teams for product manufacturing.
- Prepare and review electrical CAD drawings of controls systems, to ensure that installation and operations conform to standards and customer requirements.
- Perform electrical and controls programming.
- Direct or coordinate manufacturing, construction, installation, maintenance, support, documentation, or testing activities to ensure compliance with specifications, codes, or customer requirements.
- Perform tier 2 technical support for the Service Department.
- Compile data and produce reports regarding new, existing, or potential projects.
- Perform detailed calculations to compute and establish manufacturing, operational, or installation standards or specifications.
- Prepare specifications for purchases of materials or equipment.
- Estimate labor, material, or construction costs for project estimating purposes.
- Meet customer expectations by clear and concise two-way communications.
- Oversee project production efforts to ensure projects are completed on time and within budget.
- Collaborate and communicate positively and effectively with engineering, production, planning and other departments to resolve issues and accomplish goals.
- Component selection and bill of materials management and review.
- Take ownership of engineering/manufacturing processes and workflows.
- Design for manufacturing, lean applications, change management, and revision control.
- Maintain confidentiality.
- Ability to work under pressure to meet project deadlines in a multitasking environment.
- Ability to travel as needed to a customer’s site for the purpose of commissioning and/or troubleshooting equipment.
- Participate in continuous improvement activities.
- Identify and recommend improvement opportunities within the department and organization.
- Comply with health and safety regulations, the company handbook, quality standards, and all other company policy and procedures.
- Support the company in other duties as assigned.
Skills, Qualifications & Experience:
- Minimum of 3 years’ experience in product design for electro-mechanical products.
- AA/BS Electrical Engineering (or equivalent – Majors in: Controls and Computer Control Systems, Mechatronics Engineering, Automation Engineering, etc.).
- Hands-on electrical schematic design automation software experience (AutoCAD, EPLAN).
- Working knowledge of HMI, PLC, controls programming, servo systems, VFD’s, robotics (AB/Rockwell, Fanuc).
- Familiarity with the following software: Rockwell Logix Studio 5000 (ladder and structured text), FactoryTalk View/View Designer, Fanuc Robotics, B&R PLC/Motion Control.
- Experience with capital equipment design, production, testing and installation.
- Working knowledge of industry standards for machinery design for safety and guarding.
- MS Office suite and ERP/MRP software.
- Analytical, with attention to detail and accuracy.
- Strong problem-solving skills, systematic mindset, and continuous improvement skills.
