Controls System Engineer

As a member of the technical staff, a Systems Engineer is responsible for the development of cutting edge complete robotic solutions for logistics and e-commerce applications. This position requires the engineer to travel occasionally to client facilities to install, configure, and adjust new customer equipment, demonstrating empathy for the customer and problem-solving communication skills.


Essential Functions

  • Conceptualize, design, simulate, program, test, and demonstrate pilot/production robotic systems.
  • Create, innovate, and invent new/better automation products/solutions for material handling.
  • Produce design documents, assembly/work instructions, and bill of materials.
  • Participate in design reviews specific to cable routing/ sensor placement.
  • Create process flow diagrams for the control systems of new concept system.
  • Create I/O lists for PLC and Robot interfacing to external devices.
  • Specify PLC models and the modules needed to build out the controls system.
  • Provide technical, budgetary, and schedule information to project managers
  • Periodically travel to customer sites to collect data, install, or support deployed systems.
  • Compose/present technical communication with/for colleagues.
  • Diagnose and isolate root causes both hardware and software.
  • Assist in problem resolution specific to the program/project.
  • Create PLC ladder programs that meet the needs laid out in the project scope document that detail the conditions of satisfaction for a successfully functioning system.
  • Create comprehensive safety assessments for automated systems from a controls hardware POV.
  • Perform hands-on wiring/electrical installation.
  • Create detailed electrical schematics using Solidworks electrical or AutoCAD Electrical.
  • Install and startup equipment at the customers facility, provide training, and service support during the initial startup phase.
  • Interface with Clients and vendors to verify UL certification of all finished panel being delivered to the customer are meeting spec.

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelors in Electrical Engineering or a related field with 3+ years of experience; or 6+ years work experience.
  • PLC program development experience (Allen Bradley/Siemens).
  • Device networking protocol experience (EtherNet/IP, IO-Link, Modbus, Profinet, TCP/IP).
  • Electrical acumen to encompass wiring or devices, review schematics and troubleshooting of systems.
  • Installing and programming devices (area scanners, PLCs, barcode scanners, motion control, safety).

Education and Experience

Experience with any of the following:

  • Logistics/automation system integration experience
  • Programming and Configuration:
  • Robot Software (INFORM, MotoPlus, TP, KAREL, RAPID, UR, VAL3)
  • C++, Python, Git, Github/Gitlab

Device networking:

  • device network configuration
  • network troubleshooting

Electrical/Electronics:

  • Wiring components
  • Review electrical schematics
  • Autocad Electrical

Tools: Windows, Linux (Ubuntu), Microsoft Office, ROS-I/ROS

Work Environment

This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, cameras, photocopiers, and filing cabinets. This position will also have occasional work in the warehouse, either in our facility or our customer's. While performing the duties of this job, the engineer may be exposed to fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts, and vibration. The noise level in the work environment and job sites can be loud.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk, hear, sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle or feel, and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 35 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.


Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
Full time, between M-F, 9:00am-6:00pm.


Travel
10%-20% travel to customer sites. Travel may occasionally be international and applicants must be able to travel without restrictions.


Salary and Benefits

The salary for this role is dependent on experience. The range for this role is $98,000-128,000 per year and is a bonus eligible position.
