Controls Test Engineer - Cates Control Systems

Job Purpose: As a Controls Test Engineer, you will lead and execute testing procedures on control panels, ensuring compliance with design standards, UL and NEC requirements, and operational functionality. You will perform detailed quality assurance tasks, guide team members, and support project execution and testing.


Key Responsibilities:Testing and Quality Assurance:

  • Conduct detailed testing of control panels, ensuring compliance with design standards, UL508A, and NEC requirements.
  • Verify wire connections, labeling, fuse compliance, and conduct wire fray inspections.
  • Apply required voltages and confirm correct operation of control panel components.
  • Ensure compliance with UL standards, apply identification and UL stickers when necessary.
  • Complete check sheets and verify accuracy against drawings before panel handoff to the shipping department.
  • Perform electrical diagnostics using tools like digital multimeters.
  • Provide troubleshooting support to customers, both remotely and onsite.
  • Lead Corrective Action response for any fabrication errors affecting customers.

Technical Leadership:

  • Provide technical expertise in the design and implementation of control systems.
  • Document and develop standardized testing procedures for customized control panels.
  • Mentor junior technicians and engineers, ensuring knowledge transfer and adherence to standards.
  • Upload and test ladder logic and troubleshoot PLC/PC controllers.
  • Troubleshoot industrial networks such as EtherNet, ProfiNet, ControlNet, DeviceNet, EtherCAT, and Profibus.
  • Upload and test customer configuration parameters in VFD or Servo Drive applications.

Documentation and Compliance:

  • Review internal and customer schematics for accuracy and manufacturability.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of our Quality Management Systems.
  • Log time and tasks using systems like Epicor with job-specific travelers.

Collaboration and Support:

  • Assist CAD/Engineering teams in developing Motor, Instrument, and I/O Lists from P&IDs.
  • Aid in component selection to meet construction and compliance standards.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve operational issues in control panels during production.

Risk Management:

  • Identify risks in designs or processes and recommend solutions to mitigate issues.

Measurements of Success:

  • High-quality output with minimal rework or customer complaints.
  • Efficient time logging and task management.
  • Positive feedback from supervisors and peers on technical leadership and team collaboration.
  • Adherence to project timelines and goals.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or related field ().
  • High school diploma or GED (required).
  • 5+ years of experience in control systems, panel testing, or related fields.

Skills:Soft Skills:

  • Strong communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to work in diverse, multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Leadership abilities with experience mentoring and guiding junior team members.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Ability to effectively manage multiple priorities.

Technical Skills:

  • Expertise in AC/DC circuits, Ohm's Law, Kirchhoff's Law, and Watt's Law.
  • Familiarity with NEC, UL508A, and NFPA 70 standards.
  • Proficiency in PLC hardware, ladder logic, and PLC programming.
  • Understanding of motor control systems, automation processes, and closed-loop systems.
  • Proficient in troubleshooting VFDs, AC/DC drives, motors, and transformers.
  • Strong experience with multimeter diagnostics.
  • Skilled in reviewing and evaluating panel construction documentation.

Additional Requirements:

  • Completion of UL508A, NEC, or equivalent training or job experience.
  • Ability to stand, bend, and work in various physical conditions.
