Position Overview: 
The Level 3 Diesel Service Technician performs accurate computer, electrical, and engine diagnostics and repairs in accordance with company and industry standards on equipment including class A & B commercial trucks, pick-ups, heavy equipment or any other company equipment. 

Essential Job Functions:

  • Extensive knowledge and skills of all aspects of vehicle diagnosis and repair with a focus in electrical, wiring, and engine
  • Good time management skills to ensure tasks are completed in an efficient and safe manner
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Review reports, read work orders, and complete required documentation
  • Proficient with computer diagnostic equipment and software
  • Proficient with hand tools for machine set up and operation
  • Ensure all vehicles are road worthy, DOT compliant, and prevent roadside breakdowns
  • Inspect vehicles for damage, and record findings so that necessary repairs can be made
  • Perform tests, which may include test driving the vehicle, to ensure repairs are completed correctly
  • Safely and efficiently operate welding tools and cutting torches to repair company equipment
  • Perform roadside service repairs
  • Comply with company, state, and federal regulations and safety standards, operating rules, procedures, and guidelines
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned


Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Provide mentorship upon request from shop manager to level 1 and level 2 service technicians, appetences, and/or students in training

Diesel Engines

  • Cylinder Head and Valve Train- Repair and/or replace electronic wiring harness and brackets
  • Engine Block- Repair and/or replace crankshaft vibration damper and engine mounts
  • Lubrication Systems- Demonstrate understanding of oil condition, consumption, and oil samples
  • Cooling System- Identify engine block heater(s)
  • Air Induction and Exhaust Systems- Repair and/or replace turbocharger(s), wastegate(s), piping systems, intake manifold, gaskets, and connections
  • Fuel System- Replace components as needed
  • Engine Brakes- Inspect engine compression and/or exhaust brake housing, valves, seals, lines, and fittings

Drive Train

  • General- Repair and/or replace drive train components as needed
  • Clutch- Repair and/or replace clutch components as needed
  • Transmission- Inspect transmission breather; inspect transmission oil filter, coolers and related components; inspect speedometer components; repair and/or replace parts as needed
  • Driveshaft and Universal Joints- Repair and/or replace driveshaft and universal joint components
  • Drive Axles- Repair and relace as needed

Brakes

  • General- Repair and/or preplace brake system components and configurations as needed
  • Air Brakes: Air Supply and Service Systems- Repair and/or replace air supply system components such as compressor, governor, air drier, tanks, and lines; inspect service system components such as lines, fittings, mountings, and valves (hand brake/trailer control, brake relay, quick release, tractor protection, emergency/spring brake control/modulator, pressure relief/safety)
  • Air Brakes: Mechanical/Foundation Brake System- Repair and/or replace brake calipers, disc brake pads, mounting hardware, and brake drums
  • Air Brakes: Parking Brake System- Repair and/or replace parking brake components
  • Hydraulic Brakes: Hydraulic System- Repair and/or replace hydraulic brake system components
  • Hydraulic Brakes: Mechanical/ Foundation Brake System- Repair and/or replace rotor, disk brake, and brake drum components
  • Hydraulic Brakes: Parking Brake System- Repair and/or replace parking brake operation systems and holding devices
  • Power Assist Systems- Repair and/or replace brake assist/booster system components and emergency (back-up/reserve) brake system
  • Vehicle Dynamic Brake Systems (Air and Hydraulic); ABS, ATC, and ESC- Repair/replace automatic traction control (ATC) and electronic stability control (ESC) warning light operation systems
  • Wheel Bearings- Repair and/or replace unitized/preset hub bearing assemblies

Suspension and Steering Systems

  • General- Disable and enable supplemental restraint system (SRS); verify indicator lamp operation
  • Steering Column- Check operation of tilt and telescoping steering column; check cab mounting
  • Steering Pump and Gear Units- Repair/replace power steering pump and gear components
  • Steering Linkage- Repair and/or replace steering linkage components
  • Suspension Systems- Repair and/or replace tandem suspension equalizer components
  • Wheel Alignment- Align wheels, axles, frames, torsion bars and steering mechanisms of equipment, using special alignment equipment and wheel-balancing machines
  • Wheels and Tires- Repair and/or replace tires
  • Frame and Coupling Devices- Repair/replace frame hangers, brackets, and cross members

Electrical/Electronic Systems

  • General- Use appropriate electronic service tool(s) and procedures to check, record, and clear diagnostic codes; interpret digital (DMM) readings; check for malfunctions caused by faults in the data communication networks
  • Starting System- Understanding starter system operation, components, and configurations
  • Charging System- Identify, check, and inspect charging system components and configurations
  • Lighting System- Inspect for brighter-than-normal, intermittent, dim, or no-light operation; determine needed action; test, replace, and aim headlights
  • Instrument Cluster and Driver Information Systems- Identify the sensor/sending units, gauges, switches, relays, bulbs/LEDs, wires, terminals, connectors, sockets, printed circuits, and control components/modules of the instrument cluster, driver information system, and warning systems

Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC)

  • General- Repair and/or replace (HVAC) components as needed
  • Refrigeration System Components- Inspect A/C compressor drive belts, pulleys, and tensioners; verify proper belt alignment
  • Heating, Ventilation, and Engine Cooling Systems- Identify the source of A/C system odors; repair and/or replace HVAC system-heater ducts, doors, hoses, cabin filters, and outlets
  • Operating Systems and Related Controls- Verify blower motor operation; confirm proper air distribution; confirm proper temperature control; determine needed action

Cab

  • Instruments and Controls- Understand operation of auxiliary power unit (APU)/electric power unit (EPU)
  • Safety Equipment- Repair and/or replace safety equipment as needed
  • Hardware- Lubricate grease fittings; inspect/lubricate door and hood hinges, latches strikers, lock cylinders, safety latches, linkages, and cables; inspect quarter fender, mud flaps, and brackets


Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience
  • ASE Diesel Certification
  • DOT air brake certification
  • Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with a clean DMV record or have the ability to obtain one within six months


Physical Demands: 

  • Position may require standing for long periods of time, stooping, squatting, bending, kneeing, etc.
  • Ability to regularly lift 50 pounds and occasionally lift up to 100 pounds
  • Good vision to inspect repair work
  • Work requires concentrated mental and/or visual attention; the work involves performing complex tasks to very close accuracy and quality specifications; or a high degree of hand and eye coordinator for sustained periods.


Work Environment:

  • Work is typically performed under reasonably good working conditions; while exposure to any dust, fumes, dirt, noise, heat, vibration, cold and water may occur, such exposure is generally not present to the extent of being disagreeable

Must be able to work safely in a noisy area with many odors present
