Director, External Innovation Business Development

The Director, External Innovation serves as a member of a dynamic Research & Development team, working in close collaboration with Horizon's Business Development team, focused on evaluation of innovative products and companies that have potential to complement Horizon's existing pipeline of clinical and preclinical drug candidates.Responsibilities:Contribute to actively searching for and then evaluating potential Business Development opportunities, with deal structures that may span from M&A, in-licensing of clinical or preclinical stage assets, to research collaborations, platforms and academic SRAs that are consistent with the advancement of Horizon's pipeline.Review potential opportunities for scientific merit/feasibility and integrate commercial considerations based on input from Commercial colleagues. As discussions advance, coordinate with R&D colleagues to draft research and/or clinical development plans, from study design to resource requirements and expense forecasting. Prepare and present status, risks and mitigation strategies via oral and written presentations for ongoing evaluations to key internal stakeholders on a timely basis, including preparation of opportunity assessments and summaries for executive-level audiences. Facilitate and maintain opportunity identification and assessment processes to move projects forward in the most efficient and effective manner and provide recommendations for dismissing/deprioritizing ideas early and effectively.Facilitate creation of institutional memory for opportunities by providing clear, concise assessments and recommendations for future reference.Qualifications and Skills Required:MD and/or biomedical PhD are nice to have, but candidates with comparable technical knowledge/experience are also encouraged to apply. An MBA or technical experience with immunology would be a plus.5-10+ years biotech/pharma industry experience; could be in a business development or search/evaluation role, and/or in a drug development/discovery role - e.g., clinical development, regulatory affairs, clinical pharmacology program management, translational science, drug discovery, competitive intelligence, or related settings. Management consulting or Wall Street research experience considered as well.Must have strong cross functional leadership skills and be able to assemble and lead an internal team of cross-functional R&D experts in support of asset evaluations. Business acumen with an understanding of how Business Development contributes to corporate strategy is important.Must possess a solid foundation of understanding in drug discovery or development processes with deep familiarity in one or more aspectsStrong scientific acumen, able with little guidance to critically interpret results from pre-clinical (in vitro and in vivo) thru clinical studies, and to assess the scientific validity of mechanism of actions at playExperience interfacing with Commercial colleagues, performing and presenting competitive assessments, drafting TPPs and/or R&D plans; experience with R&D expense forecasting is a plus.Experience in disease areas of interest to Horizon are a plus (Rheumatology, Immunology, Nephrology, Dermatology).
