My Fife-based client is a growing Scottish Engineering SME that has built up a very successful reputation over the last 20+ years in the manufacture high-quality, bespoke equipment. They have an extensive design & manufacturing capability, with a great working culture. They're collaborative, pragmatic and can make quick decisions in order to benefit their staff and customer base.
Their engineering talent is renowned in the Energy sector for their design and manufacturing of production control systems and subsea assemblies to a global client base. Due to recent expansion, they're keen to recruit an Electrical & Controls Commissioning Engineer to join their team and play a critical part in delivering some exciting, high-profile projects.
The Role
The Electrical & Controls Commissioning Engineer is responsible for overseeing the installation, testing, and optimization of the electrical control systems to ensure they meet performance, safety, and quality standards.
This role plays a critical part in ensuring the efficient operation of automation and control processes in industries such as manufacturing, energy, and infrastructure. Here are the main things you’d be involved in day-to-day:
- System Integration: Coordinate the integration of control systems with other mechanical and electrical components, ensuring seamless communication and operation.
- Commissioning Plans: Develop commissioning plans, schedules, and procedures to guide the commissioning process, ensuring alignment with project goals and client requirements.
- Documentation: Maintain accurate records of commissioning activities, including test results, control system documentation, and as-built drawings.
- Troubleshooting: Identify and resolve issues, faults, and malfunctions in control systems, taking corrective actions as necessary. (Equipment will include motor control centers, VFD, instrumentation etc)
- Safety Compliance: Ensure control systems adhere to safety standards and codes, implementing safety protocols as needed.
- Client Interaction: Communicate with clients, project managers, and stakeholders to provide updates on commissioning progress, address concerns, and provide technical guidance.
- Internal Project communication: Communicate project managers, and stakeholders to provide updates on progress from design, procurement and commissioning, address concerns, and provide technical guidance thought project.
- Working knowledge of SCADA/HMI/PLC interfaces
- Work with engineering team on new designs from electrical aspects
- Training: Provide training to operators and maintenance personnel on the proper operation and maintenance of control systems.
- Quality Assurance: Ensure the quality of control system installation and functionality, identifying and addressing deficiencies.
- Work with vendors and write technical specifications for components
- Knowledge of hazardous area equipment and ATEX regulations is advantageous but not essential (training can be provided)
- Travel to site (offshore and overseas) to carry out fault finding/commissioning activities as required.
The person
We’re looking for the following experience and skills:
- Minimum of HNC/HND Electrical Engineering, Control Systems Engineering, or a related field.
- 3+ years of relevant experience in control systems engineering or commissioning.
- Strong knowledge of control systems, PLC programming, instrumentation, and automation. Familiarity with control system software (e.g., SCADA, HMI) and programming languages (e.g., ladder logic) is often required.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and clients.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities to diagnose and resolve control system issues.
- A deep understanding of safety practices and protocols related to control systems.
- Meticulous attention to detail to ensure control systems are thoroughly tested and compliant.
- Participate in the ongoing continuous improvement system
- Taking Responsibility / Ownership of their own training plans and portfolio.
