Join Our Construction Services Team as an Electrical Controls Engineer!
RETTEW, a leading engineering consulting firm, is seeking talented Electrical Control Engineers with various levels of experience to join our Facilities Team. As an Electrical Controls Engineer at RETTEW, you will develop and integrate control systems, create HMI screen designs, and establish communication strategies. You’ll interface with vendors, provide remote support using Allen Bradley tools, and develop technical documentation. Your role includes creating controls documentation, traveling for troubleshooting and installation, and designing control systems for various facilities. You’ll oversee PLC and HMI programming, apply electrical engineering principles, perform field surveys, and collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams. Requirements include a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field, at least two years of experience, proficiency in PLC, HMI, and SCADA applications, advanced knowledge of RSLogix/Studio 5000, and strong analytical and problem-solving skills If you have a knack for developing and integrating control systems, we want to hear from you!
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop application programs to control automated equipment based on specific electrical and mechanical system designs and operational requirements.
- Create application programs for Human Machine Interface (HMI) screen design.
- Develop the overall architecture and communication strategy between control system elements.
- Interface with manufacturers and vendors of software and application products, especially regarding problem diagnosis and resolution.
- Use Allen Bradley tools to provide remote support (via teleservice connection) to SCADA, PLC, and HMI systems in the field for required changes, maintenance, troubleshooting, etc.
- Develop technical documentation, including functional design specifications, maintenance, and operation manuals for our developed control systems.
- Create controls documentation for optimization projects, including control narratives, IO lists, instrumentation selection, control one-line diagrams, panel drawings, cable schedules, network architecture diagrams, and SCADA/HMI programs and screens.
- Travel domestically to field sites for troubleshooting, maintenance, and equipment installation.
- Develop overall control system designs for various projects, including water and wastewater facilities, renewable energy facilities, industrial and commercial facilities.
- Design, test, and integrate control panels into SCADA networks, ensuring real-time system monitoring and automation.
- Oversee the coordination of PLC and HMI programming, ensuring control system reliability and adherence to project requirements.
- Apply knowledge of commonly used electrical concepts, codes, standards, practices, and procedures within the consulting engineering industry.
- Perform field surveys of existing facilities and systems.
- Collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams of engineers, designers, and project managers to ensure project requirements are met.
- Comply with all company policies and procedures.
Requirements:
- A Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, or a related degree from an ABET-accredited program.
- Minimum two years of experience in electrical or controls engineering or a related field.
- Proficiency in programming PLC, HMI, and SCADA applications, particularly Allen-Bradley PLC platforms, FactoryTalk HMI, and SCADA applications.
- Advanced knowledge of RSLogix/Studio 5000.
- Proven experience in control system integration and programming.
- Knowledge of 120vac and/or 24VDC controls circuits.
- Advanced knowledge of Allen Bradley PLC/PLC Controllers or similar automation controllers.
- Advanced knowledge of ladder logic, structured text, function block, or other high-level programming .
- Familiarity with industrial communication protocols, such as Modbus, Ethernet/IP, and OPC for integration into control networks.
- Ability to read and understand system layouts, schematics, and other controls system drawings.
- Ability to perform electrical troubleshooting using various hand tools and meters.
- Knowledge of electrical engineering techniques, principles, and procedures.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficient computer skills (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
- Willingness to learn and adapt to new technologies and methodologies.
Qualifications:
- Proven ability to design and coordinate system integrations across multiple platforms and disciplines.
- Experience in the design and programming of safety systems, such as emergency shutdowns and motor-operated valve controls.
- Capable of coordinating efforts with electrical, mechanical, and civil engineers to ensure cohesive project design and execution.
- Ability to lead multiple projects, ensuring successful completion within scope, budget, and time constraints.
- Knowledge of fluid processes and instrument measuring techniques.
- Knowledge of electric power distribution.
- Successful completion of Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam (Engineer-in-Training certification)
- Knowledge of industry codes and standards, including NEC, IEEE, IEC, and NFPA.
