Senior Mechanical Design Engineer
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to join a forward-thinking Design Team specializing in district heating and cooling networks across the UK. Key Responsibilities:
Design & Engineering – Lead the design of district heating and cooling networks, including:
- Buried piping systems
- Energy centres
- Boilers & CHP units
- Thermal stores
- Plate heat exchanger assemblies
- Pumps, chillers, heat pumps & auxiliary systems
✅ Technical Leadership – Oversee and mentor a small team of design engineers, ensuring quality and consistency in project delivery.
✅ Project Management – Take ownership of key projects, managing resources and ensuring successful completion.
✅ CAD & Technical Drawings – Utilize CAD software to develop high-quality engineering drawings.
✅ Tender & Specification Development – Prepare tender scopes, specifications, bills of materials, and engineering calculations for project execution.
✅ Stakeholder Coordination – Provide technical support and collaborate with business development teams, project managers, contractors, clients, and design consultants.
✅ On-Site Involvement – Conduct site surveys, design reviews, monitor key project milestones, and support commissioning.
Candidate Requirements:
Qualifications & Experience:
✔ BEng / BSc in Engineering (Mechanical, Civil, Building Services, or similar) – Minimum 2:1 standard.
✔ 8-10 years of relevant experience in mechanical design within district energy, MEP, or building services.
✔ Working towards CEng Chartered Engineer status.
✔ Strong knowledge of CIBSE Guides, CP1, British Standards, BSRIA, IGEM, and industry authority publications.
✔ Experience leading, reviewing, and authorizing design work from fellow engineers.
✔ Understanding of Construction & Design Management Regulations 2015
General Requirements:
✔ Passion for Energy Systems – A keen interest in combined heat and power (CHP) installations, district energy networks, heat pumps, chillers, and energy-saving technologies.
✔ Engineering Aptitude – Strong skills in engineering calculations, analysis, and problem-solving.
✔ Interest in Core Engineering Principles – A solid understanding of fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, energy transfer, and stress analysis.
✔ Team Player & Self-Starter – Able to work independently and manage projects from concept to delivery.
✔ Mentorship – A natural ability to mentor, motivate, and support both design engineers and graduate engineers.
✔ Project Management – Proficiency in document control and management in line with the company's Quality Management System.
✔ Health & Safety – Operate within and adhere to the company Health & Safety policy and procedures.
✔ Communication Skills – Regularly report on project statuses through the departmental structure.
