PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Prepare accurate and timely portions of contract proposals and estimates for one or more industry market segments as defined by the Company including, the determination of applicable project plans and specifications. Minimum supervision provided when estimating items in own discipline.
TYPICAL DUTIES:
- Review drawings, specifications, and proposed project site conditions; record findings and solicit input from field operations to include in final project estimate.
- Organizing project site visits, if necessary, to define scope and familiarity with project.
- Analyze and compile estimate data that impact the cost of labor, materials, equipment requirements, location, and other factors to ensure a high quality and timely estimate.
- Analyze alternative solutions and construction methods to increase competitiveness of the bid.
- Review “take-off” quantities to ensure accuracy of data used in estimates.
- Soliciting accurate pricing from qualified subcontractors, vendors, and suppliers, to ensure adequate competitive coverage of each estimate line item.
- Utilize existing cost history as a check to complete estimate.
- Apply mathematical calculations requiring advanced analytical processes to ensure logically estimated costs are accurate.
- Analyze and communicate bidding risks, strategies and present estimate/bid to Senior/Chief Estimator for review to ensure accuracy and completeness.
- Participate in estimate and bid reviews with Senior/Chief Estimator and Management to develop estimating skills.
- Analyze competition and communicate with owners, subcontractors, public and private entities to ensure competitiveness.
- Communicate estimate bid information to field operations at pre-construction meetings to ensure understanding of scope of job.
- Prepare discipline estimates by calculating complete takeoff of scope of work.
- Maintain files within the Company’s database for working documents as back-up for estimate figures, including current (accurate and timely) information on prices from suppliers through direct contact, sales brochures, price lists, etc.
- Support other department personnel as required to support assigned projects success.
- May review and recommend design options and best solution based on cost, engineering quality, location, or availability of materials.
- Interface with Project Management personnel in support of project kickoff and operational execution.
- Maintain library of project job costs within the Company’s database for use in future project estimates.
- Build effective relationships with customers, design team, specialty contractors, suppliers, and user groups that reflect and support company vision, mission, and core values, and meets or exceeds the customer’s expectations.
- Actively participate in industry, client, and community relations to enhance company images.
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, QUALIFICATIONS, & EXPERIENCE:
- Educational and experience requirements include: 4-year engineering degree or equivalent combinations technical training and/or experience. 2-5 years estimating, controls and/or engineering experience related to similar facility construction.
- Prior Project and take-off experience highly desired
- Advanced knowledge of assigned discipline, estimating techniques and cost control, plus ability to interpret computerized cost data and systems essential.
- Use of estimating software required; Accubid & Bid 2Win is a plus
- Proficiency with all MS Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.),
- Working knowledge of civil engineering principles.
- Working knowledge of electrical and underground construction principles
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
