Position Summary Description

Accountable for the testing, commissioning and maintenance of substation and associated equipment in a manner that ensures the safe and reliable operation of and substation facilities. Develop and prepare commissioning and maintenance test plans that are effective and efficient at meeting regulatory compliance requirements, corporate standards, and guidelines in addition to industry standards and best practices. Work activities involve a high degree of complexity with respect to technical engineering concepts, tools and analysis that are required in troubleshooting, calibrating, repairing, testing, and investigating operations or failures of systems and equipment. May provide direction and technical support to technicians and specialists as needed


Essential Functions

  • Perform operational checks and tests on various substation facilities including but not limited to Power Circuit Breakers, Transformers, Instrument Transformers, Disconnect Switches, and Battery Systems
  • Verify wiring construction work is performed in accordance with detailed design print documentation
  • Troubleshoot and perform preventive, corrective, and emergent maintenance on substation equipment
  • Manage assigned capital and expense substation projects from project approval through project closeout. Operate and interpret readings and test data from test equipment
  • Document all completed work in accordance with regulatory requirements, corporate guidelines, and corporate procedures
  • Know and follow safe behaviors including all applicable safety rules and procedures
  • Provide technical guidance and directions to Senior Substation Technician, Senior Relay Technician and/or Senior Test Specialist.
  • Prepare, review, and verify maintenance test plans
  • Serve as Subject Matter Expert (SME) with compliance of assigned NERC Reliability Standard
  • Support the maintenance of inventory for Substation components for facility ratings purposes
  • Participate in the investigation of operational incidents and/or equipment failures that may lead to reportable events.
  • Perform sequence of event review, analysis of recorders and logs to perform root cause analysis to develop recommendations and corrective actions to mitigate future occurrences.
  • Performs NERC Compliance Program roles if/as designated in Seminole’s Standard Ownership Matrix (SOM) including ongoing evidence retention in “audit-ready” form as applicable and directed. You should also be familiar with Seminole’s Enterprise Internal Compliance Program (ENT-GCD-RGC-EP-054) to further your understanding of Seminole’s compliance program and the context of your duties and responsibilities attendant to your designation in the SOM.
  • Performs other duties as applicable to the position or as assigned.


Qualifications and Education Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from an ABET accredited institution. Minimum of six (6) years of experience in engineering, testing, maintenance and/or operations of electrical systems or equipment in a plant or substation environment. A master’s degree or registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) will equate to one (1) year of experience. Demonstrated organizational, time management and leadership skills. Experience with Power Circuit Breakers, Transformers, Instrument Transformers, Disconnect Switches, and Battery Systems. Experience in managing substation maintenance projects. Professional Engineer (PE) License is a plus. Field experience testing and maintaining electrical systems and equipment.

Physical Requirements

Must be able to follow established protective measures including wearing required personal protective equipment (PPE). Must possess a valid driver’s license and acceptable Motor Vehicle Report.

Working Conditions

Work is outdoors with frequent travel away from the office environment. Must be available to work outside normal business hours and occasionally stay out of town. While working in certain areas of facilities, there may be extreme temperatures and conditions. While working in substations there are the potential for exposure to hazards typical of a utility working environment.
