Summary:

This position is responsible to operate, maintain, monitor, and support critical facilities electrical infrastructure for mission-critical systems that includes power, distribution and controls systems in addition to the processes that maximize 24/7 production uptime/ availability.   Working under the direction of the Plant Engineering Manager, the Electrical Technician will closely interact with internal support teams and with local contractors and vendors. The Electrical Technician will respond to abnormal conditions in an expedient manner and develops and implements approaches to maintain high availability and reliability within operations, improve efficiency, and implement new processes or strategies.

 

Essential Functions:

 

·       Facilitates plant automation projects and initiatives

·       Coordinates modifications to programming, wiring and integration to new or existing equipment

·       Provides applied electrical technical expertise in the areas of design, review, layout, installation and operation

·       Maintains automation library

·       Maintains plant electrical standards

o   Wiring

o   Electrical Panels

o   OEM Equipment

·       Works with Maintenance Planner to schedule and perform automation preventative maintenance and calibrations

·       Works with plant personnel to:

o   Track and determine top causes of downtime

o   Reduce downtime

·       Works with other plant and contractor personnel to optimize and maintain automation inventory

·       Investigates opportunities for plant technological innovations

·       Ensures critical facility electrical systems and programming problems are identified and repaired expeditiously

·       Ensures contractors deliver quality services

·       Ensures internal customers requests are met in a timely manner at all times

·       Monitors electrical systems and associated electrical apparatus used in the plant as needed including:

o   Transformers

o   Switchgear

o   Panels/Breakers/disconnects, etc

o   UPS systems

o   PLC’s

o   Power monitoring systems

o   Instrumentation

·       Creates and reads ladder logic and flow diagrams for program design, startup, simulation and testing

·       Prepares test procedures and debugs programs

·       Designs, coordinates, troubleshoots, and supports the following while maintaining plant automation standards:

o   Programmable logic controllers (PLC’s)

o   Human Machine Interface (HMI) / SCADA systems

o   Communications

o   Databases (i.e. SQL server)

·       Configures desktop operator workstations

·       Develops process control flow diagrams

·       Develops piping and instrumentation diagrams (P& ID's)

·       Specifies and supports motors, motor starters, VFD’s and servos throughout the plant

·       Coordinates and assists with control system start-up and commissioning

·       Provides technical support to plant operations personnel

·       Develops technical documentation, training manuals, standard operating procedures and job safety analysis

·       Conducts training classes for system users.

 

Miscellaneous:

 

·       Immediately reacts to area safety problems

·       Communicates safety/quality/or operational issues to proper departments or responsible parties

·       Effectively participates in shift handoffs

·       Accurately details daily activities in log book

·       Other tasks and duties as assigned.    

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
 

·       Two-year technical degree in electrical technology or related field required

·       Knowledge of process control principles, standards and practices

·       Minimum five (5) years of relevant experience with PLC’s, instrumentation and servos

·       Demonstrated proficiency in all aspects of programming, analysis, and design

·       Ability to perform real time process software programming of PLC’s

·       Working knowledge of desktop software configuration, and networking/ communications protocols

·       Ability to plan, organize, and schedule work independently

·       Ability to communicate effectively and develop rapport with internal and external customers

·       An understanding of electrical control systems and switchgear.

·       Ability to troubleshoot using a variety of diagnostic tools including Digital Multi-meter, oscilloscope and megometer.

·       PC based computer literacy

·       Comprehend and use technical vendor manuals and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s)

·       Electrical control and Variable Frequency Drives (VFD’s)

·       Instrumentation (temperature, pressure, etc.)

·       Pneumatics

·       Motors/Drives/Gearboxes/Power Transmission Systems

·       Print reading and ability to understand Process Instrumentation Drawings (P&ID’s)

·       Ability to read and prepare wiring diagrams and blueprints

·       Use of tools including precision, hand, and powered

·       Consistently identify, track, and resolve enhancements to work procedures or methods

·       Demonstrated ability to effectively work in a team environment

·       Ability to train others

·       Ability to problem solve

·       Requires being available to respond to emergency situations as they arise.

The Electrical Technician must have the ability to become highly proficient at the following:

 

·       Food Safety Guidelines/Good Manufacturing practices (GMP’s)

·       Product Coding System

·       CMMS/ MP2/SAP System

·       Facility Sanitation/Housekeeping

·       Hydraulics

·       Fabrication & Machining of Spare Parts

·       Machine maintenance practices/methods

·       Aseptic methods, measures, and practices

·       Attendance and passing Better Process School

·       Forklift and pallet jack operation

·       Knowledge and operation of the fire control and alarm systems.

·       Expert knowledge in industrial/commercial safety best practices: lockout/tagout, arc flash protections, OSHA and state regulations.

 

Physical Demands:

Position works in a manufacturing environment. Job incumbent must be able to work in areas that are hot or cold, surfaces may be slippery, climb ladders / stairs. Ability to lift 20 pounds occasionally. Training and improvement initiatives may require candidate to travel via automobile or aircraft.  Candidate must be able to work a flexible work schedule including some nights and weekends, depending on the demands of the business.
