Position Summary
This position provides expertise and direction for Environmental, Health, Safety and Security (“EHSS”) for the Company, ensures compliance with regulations, standards, etc. and works to mitigate risks.
Essential Job Functions
Oversees all areas of EHSS for Company; develops, plans, directs and manages EHSS strategy, standards, programs, and policies; ensures compliance with all applicable codes and regulations
Maintains working relationship with appropriate regulatory agencies; serves as company liaison with OSHA, insurance carriers and other regulatory agencies
Works with senior and site management to develop and implement strategies, policies, and services to increase employee safety and reduce organization risks
Remains fully informed on existing and proposed changes in applicable regulations, protective equipment requirements and permit requirements
Leads EHSS initiatives, manages EHSS staff; mentors staff
Monitors developing international, federal, state, and local regulatory requirements and initiatives; analyzes potential impacts; provides practical recommendations and risk analyses
Ensures regulatory compliance and proper reporting; reports regularly to management on EHSS progress, opportunities, concerns, statistics, compliance, etc.
Develops safety and security processes and programs; oversees emergency preparedness
Establishes policies, procedures, standards, and documentation required; ensures consistency of application and practice
Develops and implements incident investigation protocols; ensures investigations conducted for all accidents, incidents, injuries, etc.; uses root cause analysis and other techniques; approves implementation of preventative actions
Audits EHSS work practices periodically; ensures proper planning to meet EHS requirements and activities; reviews and updates audit scope as necessary
Recommends modifications, improvements or removal of any Company equipment, facilities or machinery deemed hazardous to employee safety or health
Manages communications to appropriate management regarding hazards in work place including, but not limited to, toxic fumes, dangerous chemicals and other hazardous substances
Tracks EHSS metrics; uses data to identify and reduce risk
Establishes continuous improvement culture; approves
Coaches staff in effective hazard identification and correction of issues; identifies and controls significant loss producing exposures
Updates job knowledge regularly; participates in educational opportunities; reads professional publications; maintains personal networks; participates in professional organizations
Manages EHSS initiatives for construction, turnarounds and other project based work
Evaluates performance of EHSS program/s activities; updates as required
Works with staff to ensure proper implementation of EHSS programs, policies and procedures; verifies usage of accepted environmental and safety methodologies
Oversees records maintenance; follows records retention requirements
Abides by all safety procedures and practices applicable to location and position; participates in appropriate safety training; demonstrates commitment to and support of EHSS principles and values; champions safety
Performs other duties assigned by management that generally fall within the expected scope of this position

Experience Requirement
Minimum of 15 years’ experience in all areas of EHSS
Proven supervisory skills and at least 7 years’ supervisory experience
Demonstrated understanding of and ability to communicate effectively with regulatory authorities, government officials, major customers and senior executives within the organization
Experience creating and managing a budget including resource allocation and priority setting
Successful leadership and hands-on direction of EHSS issues in major operating facilities and business functions that support projects
Experience in a globally and technically diverse workplace
Experience leading EHSS initiatives during the design and construction phases of facilities with complex chemical processes, manufacturing, equipment, and logistics
Direct experience working with high volume solvents and chemicals
Demonstrated ability to develop, motivate and direct teams in a matrix organization
Experienced at developing and implementing customer-focused services and programs.
Previous experience with federal and state regulatory agencies (DOT, EPA, OSHA, NRC, etc.) required
Excellent communications skills; ability to clearly explain EHSS requirements to management and employees; knowledge of and communications experience with divergent cultures
Ability to multi-task, prioritize, and follow through on assignments
Good computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite; ability to use database systems and other programs and applications used by this position and at Company
Fluent in English including reading, writing and speaking; ability to read and write at a minimum of high school level; ability to clearly communicate to all levels in organization
Education Requirement
Bachelor’s Degree in Safety, Environmental, Industrial Hygiene, or similar field; bachelor’s in other area with related experience considered
Professional certification in PSM, Safety Professional or similar

This position requires an employee to be in an office environment and occasionally in a plant environment where the employee may be exposed to various chemicals and compounds, including fumes and smells, some of them hazardous. The employee may enter confined spaces and work in elevated environments. Employee will work outside at various times. Temperatures experienced in outdoor environments may range to a high of 100+ degrees F and low of 20 degrees F. Employee must be able to wear PPE required by the location. General office noise may be experienced and louder sounds and vibrations when outside. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. All environments are safe with appropriate PPE.
