Position Overview

A professional-level field engineering role that works independently and requires a solid knowledge of engineering, and power work practices. The Field Engineer is responsible for field engineering activities of assigned projects, including solving problems, understanding detailed design, project documentation and the actions needed to successfully installation, start-up, commission, troubleshooting of equipment at the project site and field close-out of projects for one or more clients. Responsibilities may include creating unique engineering solutions, checking work of other field engineers, training client employees; addressing field-based complaints and field-based problems; and maintaining a professional interface with the client. The Field Engineer will work with limited direction from his/her supervisor. The Field Engineer may work autonomously or with others.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Completes detailed daily log reports and provides summary reports as needed or requested to provide updates on field activities and status.
  • Discusses and understands project scope and schedule as provided by Project Execution personnel.
  • Directly performs and/or supervises the field equipment startup, commissioning and prepares all logs/records/reports to document the process and results.
  • Troubleshoots and if necessary, repairs/re-engineers the equipment in the field to accomplish project deliverables.
  • Communicates project status through project reports, meeting minutes, action lists and all other required communications.
  • Works with clients to understand their concerns and needs; keeps them informed and apprised of progress; and endeavors to keep the clients satisfied with Fuel Tech and its products.
  • Adheres to Fuel Tech policies, including standards, quality, procedures and work instructions (checklists), affirmative action, equal opportunity policies, safety plans and assigned goals.
  • Always performs the job in a safe and responsible manner; abiding by all laws, codes and site-specific work rules; and striving to delight the client with performance and results.
  • Creates “lessons learned”/”incident reports” documenting extraordinary concerns encountered during field activity to share with other project execution team members.

Education and Experience

  • BS in Engineering (Mechanical, or Chemical .
  • Requires a minimum of 3-5 years of demonstrated project field engineering experience.
  • First-hand experience with SNCR or SCR is .
  • Proficiency with the given disciplines of the position and significant experience with utility boilers, industrial furnaces and related equipment is essential.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Strong competency in the use of Project Management, Spreadsheet and Word Processing software.

Knowledge: Working knowledge of field engineering tools and methods and of power plant equipment and operations. Experience with the operation and maintenance of pumps, valves, instrumentation, electrical equipment and controls in a given design. Mechanical aptitude required.

Abilities: Works with little supervision and oversight; completes field assignments with diligence and professionalism. Applies engineering and mechanical principles to solve field problems. Demonstrates attention to detail and can develop and articulate field problems graphically and verbally. Prioritizes and plans work activities with little support.

Skills: Reads, analyzes and interprets technical data and information. Ability to plan and organization activities. Writes reports, business correspondence, and assists with procedure manuals. Presents information and responds to questions from peers, senior management, clients and vendors. Ability to make independent decisions that balance technical and business aspects. Established competency in the use of Communication Software (i.e. e-mail), Field Engineering, Spreadsheet, Presentation and Word Processing software.

Travel and Physical Requirements

50-75% travel but may involve extended periods in the field and/or international travel to support critical outage projects with extended work hours on occasion. Routinely requires work in hot, dirty environments for periods of time. Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
