This is an entry-level position that prepares the employee for advancement through field training, mentorship, and obtaining certifications required for field work. The Employee will receive direction from project managers, principal engineers, and senior engineers and sometimes work alongside technicians. The goals of this position are to familiarize the employee with BPFT service lines, develop comfort with field work and client interactions, develop report writing skills, and introduce the employee to other AET departments.
Essential Functions

- Conduct field documentation of existing structures, building components, or construction materials, including condition survey/evaluation, material sampling/testing, structural evaluation/analysis, and vibration monitoring.
- Write reports and communicate with clients and project managers based on the fieldwork and project requirements.
- Understand how to read an ASTM procedure, translate that into proposed field work, understand the science behind the ASTM procedure/report, write report, and give engineering interpretation to the field work results.
- Learn how to use AET software/web interface tools and commit to using it to accomplish daily work. These software programs include but are not limited to Dynamics, ADP, Spectra Quest, Microsoft 365, and Egnyte.
- Learn how to take concrete field cores and submit samples to the petrography and chemistry labs.
- Learn how to use non-destructive testing devices and software (GPR, GPS, MIRA, UPV, see snake, thermographic camera) to investigate concrete, soil, and metals and translate investigative field work into a report that is usable and meaningful for the client.
- Assist with equipment calibration; perform routine maintenance; recommend purchases of new or replacement equipment to Division Manager; assist in developing and implementing QA/QC procedures and policies for the Division.
- Assist project managers in preparing proposals and promoting AET services.
Other Areas of Accountability
- Conduct field, laboratory and office activities in a manner consistent with federal, state, and local regulations, along with AET’s QA and Health and Safety Policies, to promote the safety and protection of employees, clients and the public.
- Maintain valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record. Position requires use of personal vehicle for company business. Maintain compliance with DOT driver regulations if required for position. Maintain appropriate physicals if required for position.
- Travel to project destinations that sometimes include overnight and/or multi-day stays.
- Perform duties outdoors, sometimes in extreme heat and cold, and away from the main office/laboratory location.
- Properly use and maintain company vehicles, instruments, workshop, and equipment.
- Maintain current working knowledge of applicable regulations, policies, procedures and technologies in designated field(s).
- Participate in at least one professional organization.
- Continue progress toward professional engineering registration.
- Coordinate with project manager to complete assigned projects within budget and satisfy client needs.
- Coordinate with other AET staff with the ultimate goal of increasing efficiency, productivity and communication.
- Develop and maintain business contacts.
- Perform other tasks as necessary to meet departmental or company goals.
Qualifications and Education Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Architectural or Construction Engineering.
- 0-3 years of related experience.
Skills
- Knowledge of fundamental engineering or scientific principles within specialty area and ability to apply that knowledge to the job.
- Experience analyzing and interpreting data, accurately observing and recording field activities, reading plans, blueprints, and specifications as related to the position.
- Mechanical aptitude to work effectively with instrumentation, hand tools, and ladders.
- Ability to interact effectively with people, work effectively within project teams, resolve issues and problems in a constructive manner, and work independently in the field.
- Communication skills including technical writing, sufficient to convey complex technical information to diverse audiences.
- Capable of the physical labor required, with personal protective equipment. Ability to occasionally move 50 to 100 pounds.
- Be willing to learn new procedures, equipment, and software as they pertain to new BPFT service lines.
- Ability to work independently and track time on multiple projects for multiple project mangers while adhering to scope, budget, and timeline.
Pay Transparency
Base compensation is expected to be in the range of $30.41 and $37.19 per hour based on skill set and experience. Work Environment
This job primarily operates in a professional office environment and uses specialized equipment specific to this job. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, and filing cabinets.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
