Head of Inspection and Maintenance
Job Description
We are currently seeking an experienced Head of Inspection & Maintenance to join a dynamic SME organisation, part of a larger group of companies, offering a range of services across Rail, Highways, and the Built Environment.
This company is renowned for its expertise in structural inspection and difficult access solutions, with a strong portfolio of high-profile projects across the UK.
The Head of Inspection & Maintenance will lead the department’s sustainable growth and profitability, ensuring operational oversight and budgetary control. Responsibilities include assessing, estimating, and submitting tenders, particularly for inspection, materials testing, and maintenance projects requiring difficult access techniques. The role oversees team competence, work quality, and project delivery within budget and timelines. Additionally, the role involves client relationship management, business development, accreditation compliance, and process improvements.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop business opportunities and lead the achievement of departmental strategy and budget.
- Act as the Health, Safety & Environmental focal point within the unit.
- Identify key risks and inefficiencies and implement improvements through change projects.
- Mentor and develop both immediate team members and the wider department.
- Act as the primary client contact for assigned projects.
- Enhance the visibility of the business in Rail, Highways, and Buildings sectors.
- Stay updated on industry developments and standards to identify growth opportunities.
- Lead tender writing, pricing, and submissions, especially for high-value projects.
- Oversee project management, including budgeting, resource allocation, and data analysis.
- Perform line management duties, coaching and mentoring junior staff.
- Conduct Performance and Development Reviews (PDRs) and support team learning initiatives.
Qualifications & Experience:
Essential:
- Engineering Degree (General, Civil, Structural, or Construction).
- 8+ years’ experience in structural inspection or asset management.
- Line management and leadership experience.
- Highways & Rail industry experience.
- Financial and contractual knowledge, including budgets, accruals, and NEC contracts.
- Business strategy development and pricing work assessments.
- Experience in writing bids for large tender submissions.
- Proven ability to devise safe systems of work, including Risk Assessments & Method Statements.
- Knowledge of Network Rail and Highways Standards.
- Strong delegation and leadership skills.
Desired:
- NEBOSH certificate and Professional Membership (ICE, IStructE, IHE, IAM).
- Senior management experience.
- Expertise in difficult access work (Rope Access, Working in Water, Confined Spaces).
- Deep understanding of built structures, construction, repair, and failure mechanisms.
- Experience mentoring team members in job roles and professional development.
- ISO standards and audit process knowledge.
- Network Rail STE competencies (STE4, STE2), IOSH Managing Safely, IRATA, CITB SMSTS, Confined Space Entry, Network Rail PTS, and vocational assessment competence.
This role requires a strategic leader with technical expertise, business acumen, and strong leadership skills to drive departmental success and expand the business in key sectors.
