Job summary

As key part of the Senior Management Team and with a focus on technical expertise and people management, the main responsibilities of The Head of Supply Chain include:

  • Providing leadership in the supply chain activities
  • Delivering bottom line improvement and improved customer experience through strong supply chain relationships.
  • Maintaining knowledge of waste management laws and best practices, ensuring compliance with relevant regulations, monitoring supplier operations and performance, conducting supplier audits, and staying up to date with industry changes.
  • Acting as an ambassador for the Company, reflecting the Company culture and values.

Responsibilities and Duties

Strategy

  • Identify business requirements and translate these into a supply chain strategy to reduce cost of sales and ensure full geographic coverage for all waste/resource types with reputable suppliers.
  • Create and agree the Company’s supply chain strategy to support the overall business strategy and continually recommend improvements and communicate the strategy at all levels.
  • Define the Company’s procurement model and continually review to meet changing business needs.
  • Stay abreast of developments in the supply chain and waste management fields, particularly (without limitation) innovation in resource management, net zero, zero waste, circular economy and the regulatory environment and identify and communicate risks and opportunities arising.
  • Prepare and support the preparation of successful bids (including tenders, pricing, re-pricing) including (without limitation) by building successful relationships with all stakeholders and procuring high quality waste and resource management services and deliverables on best and favourable commercial terms.

Supply Chain Management

  • Work closely with suppliers to obtain competitive pricing for waste and resource management services.
  • Collaborate, develop, manage and/or rationalise suppliers effectively to achieve Company goals while securing full supplier coverage with reputable/quality suppliers.
  • Champion and lead the Company in its modern slavery practices. Comply with customer modern slavery conditions including by implementing modern slavery due diligence into supplier on-boarding and monitoring. Represent the Company externally at modern slavery forums.
  • Identify, support, lead or manage (as appropriate) all other CSR and ESG activities involving the supply chain.
  • Resolve supply chain issues as they arise including invoice queries, service queries, sourcing new suppliers and innovation in the supply chain.
  • Negotiate commercial terms with suppliers including on back-to-back terms where appropriate and ensuring contractual protection for the Company.
  • Comply with all regulatory requirements regarding the procurement of goods and services
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with supply chain partners while improving the Company’s reputation in the waste and resource industry.
  • Partner with suppliers in relation to specific sales campaigns and obtain supplier intel, information and training about current and future market conditions and report to the business to identify and communicate risks and opportunities in the supply chain.
  • Continually review supplier performance providing recommendations that will drive financial performance and provide added value.
  • Develop and maintain a portfolio of skip suppliers to meet business requirements (Skip Desk).
  • Maintain a current and working knowledge of the law, guidance and best practice relating to waste management (including law relevant to suppliers and not only to waste brokers).
  • Ensure adequate systems, processes and policies are in place to ensure compliance with law relevant to waste management (including without limitation in respect of waste information and record keeping).
  • Monitor supplier operations and performance as appropriate and in compliance with Company values, policies, and procedures - if a supplier does not comply with Company standards to recommend suspension or discontinued use of that supplier.
  • Ensuring supplier audits are carried out on onboarding and at appropriate intervals thereafter (either by the role holder or team member) and maintaining records of supplier audits in accordance with Company requirements.
  • Maintain a current and working knowledge of suppliers, competitors, and future changes in the law to support the Company to identify new suppliers, save costs/maximise profit and deliver innovative and/or cost-effective waste management solutions to customers.
  • Arrange and attend on site supplier visits as required.

Development & Implementation

  • Work with stakeholders to gather and agree detailed business requirements.
  • Identify ways to manage the supply chain through technology to improve productivity, efficiency and enhance supplier experience. Continually improve any supply chain system.
  • Manage the supplier portfolio end-to-end (from identification, on-boarding, monitoring, and termination), including by implementing, supervising, and maintaining the supplier portal (to automate aspects of the supplier relationships).
  • Deliver agreed supply chain projects on time.
  • Develop, implement, monitor, and continually improve supplier on-boarding.
  • Mobilise, re-mobilise or de-mobilise services as agreed with the customer.

People Management

  • Build and lead a high performing team motivated and committed to delivering exceptional service to internal clients and who understand the strategic and tactical supplier relationships.
  • Coach and develop team members to improve their supply chain expertise and commercial awareness.
  • Build productive relationships with key stakeholders across the business.
  • Perform all duties in line with core values, mission and vision of the Company.
  • Efficiently plan and schedule the workflow in Supply Chain to meet customer and business needs.

Experience

  • Previous experience working within the waste industry.
  • Previous experience in a similar, senior supply chain role.
  • Experience in MS Office Suite (especially Excel).
  • MCIPS qualification or studying towards.
  • Education to degree, NVQ or similar level.
  • Good understanding of contract law.

Other

  • Driver’s licence and willingness to travel and stay away from home.
