Principal HVAC Design Engineer
Position Overview
As a Principal HVAC Design Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in leading complex HVAC design projects for large-scale industrial and federal projects. This position requires advanced technical knowledge, leadership skills, and the ability to oversee all aspects of HVAC design execution. Acting as the project area lead, you’ll ensure technical accuracy, quality, and compliance throughout every project phase.
Key Responsibilities
- Leadership & Oversight: Guide and supervise engineers and designers, providing technical leadership under the general supervision of the Discipline Lead Engineer.
- Problem Solving: Analyze complex issues and make independent technical recommendations that align with project requirements.
- Project Design & Execution:
- Develop and review HVAC specifications, design criteria, and engineering analyses.
- Oversee load calculations, airflow diagrams, and system operation sequences.
- Specify and size HVAC equipment, including air handling units, ducts, and black utility systems.
- Develop specifications for chillers, boilers, air compressors, and cooling towers based on process requirements.
- Multi-Discipline Coordination: Collaborate with other disciplines, project management, clients, and vendors to resolve technical issues.
- Quality & Compliance: Ensure compliance with Project Quality Plans and procedures, as well as federal, state, and local codes and standards.
- Procurement & Construction Support: Support procurement and construction phases, reviewing technical bids, vendor submissions, and responding to construction RFIs.
- Reporting & Documentation: Manage project progress reports, schedules, and material forecasts, and track key metrics to ensure project alignment with scope, cost, and schedule baselines.
Basic Requirements
- Citizenship: U.S. Citizenship is required.
- Education & Experience: Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering with at least 15 years of relevant experience.
- Technical Knowledge:
- Proficiency with HVAC codes and standards, including Department of Energy requirements.
- Intermediate computer skills, including word processing, spreadsheets, email, and presentation software.
- Experience with 3D modeling, CADD, and multi-discipline project environments for large EPC projects.
Discipline-Specific Skills
- Advanced knowledge of HVAC system design, including load calculations and system sequence development.
- Skilled in sizing and routing HVAC ducts, as well as specifying air handling units and black utility systems.
Qualifications
- Professional Engineer License: PE license is .
- Specialized Industry Experience:
- Experience with EPC projects for U.S. Department of Energy, federal agencies, nuclear, manufacturing, pharmaceutical, or biotechnology sectors.
- Knowledge of nuclear facility design per ASME NQA-1 standards.
- Project Management: Demonstrated experience managing large projects, including project setup, scheduling, progress reporting, and close-out.
- Field Experience: Practical experience in construction administration and troubleshooting on-site issues.
