Our Client is an international Analytical Laboratory committed to global food health and safety through their analytical testing service.

Mission of the Role

The Group Leader performs an essential role by leading the laboratory testing group to provide high quality testing services for clients through continuous sample flow while maintaining the QA/QC conditions of the department. This position ensures that testing and method development is conducted accordingly while managing procedural efficiency and effectiveness to achieve the Company's mission and objectives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plans and supervises daily operations of the laboratory testing group; ensures punctual sample flow, quality, accuracy, consistency, and completeness of results. Assumes technical responsibilities, including analytical duties as necessary.
  • Consults with other department supervisors to allocate workload assignments with current personnel resources as needed.
  • Counsels employees working in the department regarding challenges encountered.
  • Provides performance management of department staff in accordance with company policies, supporting technical and professional growth.
  • Coordinates department resources management in cooperation with the Laboratory Manager, including allocation of staffing, equipment, and maintenance of general lab supplies.
  • Assists the Laboratory Manager in coordinating laboratory operations for the Group and other department Chemists.
  • Leads research, development, and implementation of the latest technologies and methods.
  • Supports the Quality Management System and regulatory compliance. Responds to QA findings or corrective actions for department activities. Implements data validation, internal quality control, and process review steps to ensure data quality and maintenance of laboratory accreditations.
  • Contributes to continuous improvement and marketing of laboratory operations through market research and participation in trainings, networking events, conferences, and trade shows. Provides technical insights to laboratory management.
  • Implements and enforces safety regulations and codes, working in a safe manner to prevent injury.
  • Acts as a technical resource for sales and client inquiries.
  • Performs and assists in training; serves as a resource and mentor to Chemist 1, 2, and 3 positions.
  • Supports Chemist 2 and 3 through review of data packages submitted by Chemists.
  • Performs responsibilities and duties of Chemist 1, 2, and 3, as needed.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Manages Chemist 1, 2, and 3 positions in the department. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with organization policies and applicable laws, including interviewing and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; assisting in career development; addressing complaints; and resolving problems.


Required Qualifications:

Education

Bachelor's degree (B.S.) in Chemistry or related science from a four-year college or university; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Skills & Experience

  • Successful experience working independently
  • Thorough understanding of department-specific instruments with conventional, MS, MSMS, HR-MSMS Orbitrap detectors, and other new technologies' operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting
  • Analytical method troubleshooting and development
  • Experience mentoring and training others, specifically in extraction, analytical, and instrument methodology
  • Experience collaborating with different business departments
  • Connected with relevant external organizations
  • Familiar with laboratory business environment
  • Improvement and learning initiatives
  • Ability to handle multiple priorities and deadlines

Skills

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write Standard Operating Procedures, analytical methods, reports, business correspondences, and additional laboratory documentation.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts such as exponents, logarithms, and quadratic equations. Ability to apply mathematical operations to tasks such as frequency distribution, determination of test reliability and validity, analysis of variance, correlation techniques, sampling theory, and factor analysis.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

Qualifications

  • Successful experience in supervising a team
  • Experience with high resolution accurate mass spectrometry (HRMS) and/or cutting-edge new technologies
  • Experience with new instrument implementation and validation
  • Experience with sample processing and extraction method development, particularly for pesticides and process contaminants in food matrices
  • Knowledge of other relevant technologies and markets
  • Business mindset
  • Experience proposing new marketing initiatives
  • Experience working in international businesses
