Role
The Quality and Environmental Team is part of SPT Networks and provides business wide leadership, strategy and direction integrating business and group Quality/Environmental and Safety policies, programs and processes in support of operational excellence, legal compliance and safe working practices.
This includes delivering Systems support and advice to over 500 employees and agency professionals within SPT and to 800 -1000 contractors, based at our project construction sites.
The Lead Environmental Advisor is a supporting role within the SP Transmission business, assisting on delivery of environmental compliance and providing specialist environmental advice within major engineering and construction projects throughout the full project lifecycle from development into construction and operation to decommissioning.
Assigning the team of Environmental Advisors workload and ensuring effective resources are available to deliver the projects. Providing consistent environmental services for the infrastructure projects and reviewing trends and developing appropriate corrective actions.
Supporting the Environmental and Quality Manager in the delivery of the departmental objectives promoting environmental best practice, ensuring regulatory and legal environmental compliance as well as maintaining and improving the company Environmental Management System.
What you’ll be doing

Provide professional leadership and direction to the Environmental Advisors to support and advice to the project’s teams on all aspects of the environment, whilst in parallel working on your own projects

Promote environmental best practice at all stages of an engineering and construction projects

Engage and collaborate with stakeholders and regulators and take part in their initiatives

Liaise with contractors’ representatives to establish good working relationships in relation to environmental management on sites

Implement and maintain the EMS and recommend improvements as required in line with current legislation and industry good practice

Monitor and control environmental performance on construction sites and analyse, trend, and interpret environmental information to prepare annual and ad-hoc business reporting requirements for both internal and external distribution

Develop and deliver environmental training and awareness initiatives

Represent and promote the Environmental Team in internal and external meetings, workshops, management reviews and forums – communicating best practice standards and initiatives

Support the implementation of new strategies, techniques, and practices to improve environmental performance and efficiencies and to deliver waste minimisation, biodiversity net gain and Net Zero commitments

Utilise the findings from reporting data, assessments, external and internal audits to drive the T2 Environmental Action Plan and inform key business decisions

Act as the first point of contact for Environmental escalation issues
What you’ll bring

Proven experience of completing similar roles on major energy projects preferably in the utility transmission sector
-
Significant experience of environmental management systems, environmental auditing, dealing with the environmental regulators, ideally within a commercially focused utility, service or construction business

Pro-active and diligent approach

ISO 14001 lead auditor qualifications desirable

In-depth knowledge of current and developing environmental legislation is essential

Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Innovative, creative thinking and problem solving – dealing with conflicting requirements

Experience of collaboration with multiple parties

Planning of Environmental resources across all live sites, ensuring each has an allocated advisor who provides the necessary support.

Implementing various standard systems and procedures obtaining buy-in from and satisfying multiple stakeholders whilst minimising the impact on company performance.

Implementing systems and procedures which facilitate the delivery of company goals and objectives short and long term.

Ability to look ahead and design for the future as well as now.

Influencing Senior Management, Project Teams including Project Managers, Engineers, Construction and Site Managers and Suppliers/Contractors to meet the Quality and Environmental requirements for a portfolio of engineering and construction energy related projects.

Day to day decisions relating to the management of Quality Management System arrangements.

Making decisions on Contractor and Supplier suitability.

Updating and communicating with multiple stakeholders across the business without compromising the Quality Team programme of works.
Minimum Criteria
-
Significant experience in a Environmental role in a similar size organisation.

Degree qualified or equivalent experience in an HSEQ or related discipline
-
Significant experience in management systems, dealing with the external certification bodies, ideally within a commercially focused utility, engineering, or construction business.

In-depth knowledge of the current ISO 14001 Standard.

Current valid driving licence.

Lead Auditor qualification and auditing experience

Excellent written and verbal communication skills

PC knowledge including Microsoft applications

Proven experience of working with a portfolio of projects

Ability to lead and work as part of a team
