Manager, Technical Department

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Manage and track R&D team projects and priorities. Develop formulations for a variety of products. Collaborate cross-functionally on formula development, formula-relevant documentation, raw materials selection and evaluation, supplier qualification, and testing requirements. Provide technical expertise and support to other members of the R&D team.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
- Manage key development projects for customers and ensure timely completion.
- Ensure appropriate tests/QC checks are performed efficiently.
- Training and coaching of the technical staff.
- Ensure that all products are manufactured according to standard procedures and that all quality processes are followed.
- Involved with continuous improvement.
- Provide positive reinforcement and feedback to staff.
- Assist in the approval and procurement of low-cost raw material alternatives.
- New Chemicals Regulatory Issues - TSCA, Environment Canada, US Customs, etc.
- Product qualification to industry standards - IPC, Bellcore, UL, IEC, JEDEC, etc.
- Reviews technical problems and procedures of departments and recommends solutions to problems or changes in procedures.
- Research and review technical publications, articles, and abstracts to stay abreast of technical developments in industry.
OTHER DUTIES:
- Participates in product related training of personnel from other Departments.
- Other duties as assigned from time to time.
REQUIRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or other similar Science discipline combined with work experience in ink or coatings Development and Manufacturing.
- 10+ years’ experience in hands on formulation role.
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents.
- Ability to respond to inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.
- Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format.
- Ability to develop and implement strategies consistent with organization’s long-range goals and objectives.
- Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.
- Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems.
- Ability to deal with nonverbal symbolism (formulas, scientific equations, graphs, etc.,) in its most difficult phases.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Occasional weekend or overtime work.
- Occasional travel will be required.
- Chemical laboratory/manufacturing plant environment.
SAFETY HAZARDS:
- Moving mechanical parts.
- Fumes / airborne particles.
- Extreme heat.
- Risk of electrical shock and vibration.
- Loud noise level.
