Marine Captain (100GT Auto / Passenger Vessel)

The Marine Captain is responsible for the operation of an auto and passenger ferry vessel not to exceed 100gt. The captain directs the ferry's activities and operates the vessel safely and efficiently. This position serves as the primary contact while the vessel is in operation to ensure compliance with applicable state and federal laws and regulations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Must safely navigate inland waters in a highly trafficked vessel convergence area.
- Safety of passengers, Deckhands, Mechanics and maintenance personnel on board the vessel.
- Responsible for the response to any emergency condition that occurs while in transit or moored.
- Report vessel malfunctions, and any unsafe conditions to port captains immediately.
- Arrive for duty fifteen minutes before shift for briefing by off-going officer.
- First line supervisor of Deckhands that are assigned to the vessel.
- Fill out ships log; keep an ongoing log of trips, vehicles, and any events.
- Comply with all Fisher Island standards (i.e., grooming, conduct, policies and procedures).
- Be familiar with both company and departments policies and procedures, rules and regulations.
- Knowledge of all safety systems and procedures.
- Must actively monitor marine VHF Radio Ch 16, 13 and company radio frequencies.
- Able to work any shift, including flexible schedules, nights, weekends and holidays.
- Perform other duties as requested by FICA management.
Qualifications
- USCG and MRO licenses
- High school diploma
- Must possess a valid driver’s license
- Mechanical ability
- Excellent communication skills
- Neat appearance
- Ability to swim (Required)
- Speak, read and write English
Physical Demands and Work Environment
- Ability to stand and walk on nearly a constant basis
- Able to bend, rotate and reach frequently
- Carry, push/pull and/or lift materials weighing upwards of 75 lbs.
- Ascending/descending stairs or ladders safely
- Manipulate/handle/grip materials required to perform job
- Maneuver through/in/around small and/or confined areas within the vessel
- Must be able to maintain both static and dynamic standing balance to complete various duties associated with job
- Must be capable of performing emergency duties as listed in the vessel's station bill
Licenses, Certifications, Registration
- Requires a Driver’s License, USCG Merchant Mariners Credentials Master- 100 GRT (Inland Waters) Current USCG Medical Card and Marine Radio Operators licenses.
