Tata Group has set-up a cell-manufacturing operations and named it Agratas. Agratas will be building two Gigafactories, one in India and one in the UK. Initially the factories will serve two anchor customers within the Tata Family - Tata Motors Ltd and JLR, with the India factory serving TML and European factory serving JLR. The Role

The purpose of the role is to lead the Battery Material research for the development of the next generation batteries.

Using state-of-the-art facilities, you will be actively involved in developing new battery technologies, and on contributing to improvements to the company’s product portfolio. Achieving your goals will be challenging but immensely rewarding, and you will be expected to demonstrate a high degree of initiative, autonomy, perseverance and dedication as part of the team.

You will find the optimal balance between performance and speed and will collaborate with our academic partners to help customers achieve their goals. You will support collaborative research with key leading UK universities and other external partners as part of this role.

Responsibilities

  • Design and carry out experimental test programmes, including reporting to key stakeholders.
  • Develop and implement research on new active materials, formulations, concepts, processes, and understanding of limiting mechanisms using advanced characterisation techniques.
  • Characterise and evaluate battery materials electrochemically, including a systematic examination of critical factors in active material synthesis.
  • Cell-related test data management and analysis; electrical, material, and thermal characterisation, for example, for coin, cylindrical, and pouch cells.
  • Regular team and management reports and presentations.
  • Adhere to and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs) in accordance with the highest safety requirements.
  • Keep up with current state-of-the-art in the field (academic publications, patents).
  • Direct research and facility development activities for Material Research and Lab facilities.

Knowledge / Experience required

  • PhD in Electrochemistry, Chemistry, Materials Science, or a related subject.
  • At least three years of hands-on expertise in experimental physical sciences R&D, whether as part of academic or industrial activity. • Knowledge of electrochemical Li-ion cell measurements.
  • Previous experience executing laboratory studies autonomously, adhering to rigorous deadlines, and maintaining high quality standards.
  • Self-motivated, hardworking, and organised.
  • A high level of initiative, autonomy, perseverance, and team dedication.
  • Experience in advanced material physical and chemical characterization:
  • SEM, TEM, XRD, XRF techniques.
  • Surface analysis techniques (i.e. XPS).
  • FT-IR, Raman spectroscopy.
  • Separation techniques (i.e. chromatography).
  • Robust knowledge of electrode synthesis processes and material and electrode. characterization, including particle size distribution (i.e. BET, DSC/TGA)
  • Previous experience of working with Universities and Research partners.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with strong influencing and engagement skills.
