Our mechanical adjustable speed drive technology can improve the efficiency and output of a variety of rotating machines, including pumps, compressors, heavy duty engines and vehicles. With more than 50 patents and proven technology leadership, Orbital Traction is working on expanding our presence in a variety of markets. Job Role The Mechanical CAD Designer is responsible for capturing detailed mechanical design using CAD.  He or she participates in the design along with engineers, of mechanical components, equipment, and machinery. Applies knowledge of engineering principles to design systems and products required by the company. May be involved in fabrication, operation, application, installation, and/or repair of mechanical products.  Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Primary design of mechanical, hydraulic, and rotating components as part of a complete solution
  • Generates medium-complexity detailed designs based on layouts, sketches, 2D and 3D models, or verbal instruction, with occasional supervision from the project engineer.
  • Create, evaluate and correct CAD drawings that accurately represent the design intent of the parts, including tolerances and geometric tolerancing.
  • Perform analysis on mechanical assemblies with functional use of techniques such as tolerancing stack-ups, geometric dimensioning, and tolerance analysis.
  • Design test fixtures required to perform product testing for qualification of assemblies.
  • Provide technical support to vendor base and participate in vendor selection and meetings as necessary.
  • Write documentation including assembly instructions, design documents, and status reports with ability to and provide detailed and accurate information including estimates and completion of his/her own tasks derived from engineering instruction, such that project timelines are met on a consistent basis.
  • Maintain files within BOM structures, PDM vault, and ERP file system related data according to standard practices. 
  • Produces work of acceptable quality (clarity, completeness, correctness, sustainability) with minimal oversight.

Qualifications/Requirements: 

  • Associates degree in design/drafting or other relevant technical field of study
  • 5+ years of related experience with SolidWorks CAD system with 8000 to 12,000 hours of experience using approved parametric feature-based computer-aided design software (Creo, SolidWorks, Inventor). 
  • Strong mechanical / electro-mechanical background and design skills 
  • Experienced with structured Engineering Change Process
  • System design, integration and lay-out of mechanical assemblies, sensors, electronics, harnesses, and other parts 
  • Additional Technical Design Skills:  Gear set / CVT understanding, Bearing selection / design, Hydraulics / fluid lubrication, Thermal analysis
  • Specialized Knowledge & Skills (If Applicable) in the following areas:
    • Sufficient understanding of the mechanical features, components, and architectures of his/her specific product, and possesses basic understanding of how these mechanical systems interface with other systems to provide product functions.
    • Independently identifies relevant problems for their designs and reports them for action by the team.
    • Understanding of the available manufacturing techniques and technologies used to fabricate his/her designs.
    • Functional capability using CAD software to generate and maintain CAD models and drawings of parts and assemblies.
    • Sufficient functional knowledge of the data management systems used to store, document and sustain written, graphic and geometric engineering documentation.
    • Proficiency in MS Office
    • Appropriate interpersonal style to work effectively with all other Team members in a dynamic and enjoyable work environment
