Mechanical Design Engineer
Job Description
Advanced Innovative Engineering seeks a highly skilled and experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to join our team in Lichfield. The Engineer will have a strong product design and development background and can take on challenging engineering activities in a fast-paced, dynamic environment. The successful candidate will join a vibrant and innovative team committed to pushing the boundaries of what is possible with the Rotary Engine, particularly in the aerospace industry.
Responsibilities
- Design and develop propulsion systems, components, and subassemblies for aerospace applications.
- Evaluate and enhance the performance and efficiency of existing products.
- Develop and prototype new products in line with the company’s Product Development Processes.
- Perform detailed engineering analysis to assess new designs' reliability, safety, performance, and risk.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure designs meet customer and regulatory requirements.
- Coordinate development schedules, communicate design issues throughout the team, and provide input into product specifications.
- Stay current with industry trends and advancements to integrate new ideas and technologies.
- Undertake testing and theoretical analysis to ensure product safety and efficacy.
- Research using mathematical modelling to evaluate new developments and innovations.
- Liaise with customers and suppliers to resolve design issues.
- Provide design support at all stages of the design process from initial requirements capture and proposal preparation, through detail design to manufacture and qualification within a multi-disciplinary engineering team.
- Develop optimised product designs in terms of cost, weight and robustness by challenging existing designs and offering new ideas.
- Present internally and to customers for design reviews.
- Ensure engineering excellence across the mechanical engineering discipline through capturing lessons learned, ensuring best practice and creation of standard work.
- Ensure that design engineering procedures and work instructions are implemented in a consistent and rigorous way.
- Create and distribute technical publications, including writing, rewriting and editing technical documents.
Experience and Qualification Summary
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in mechanical design, preferably in the aerospace industry.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
- Proficient in CAD software (SolidWorks) and simulation tools (FEA and CFD).
- Strong mechanical design principles, stress analysis, thermodynamics, and materials science knowledge.
- Experience with aerospace regulations and standards is .
- Excellent “hands-on” engine/powertrain development experience.
- Computer literate, familiar with general PC software (e.g. Windows, MS Office)

Training
On-the-job training and specialist courses will be provided as required. The role offers the opportunity to work alongside highly experienced engineers.
Travel Requirements
Occasional travel to meet clients and suppliers may be required.

Self-motivated, dynamic individual with an ability to see what needs doing and do it right. Whilst you may have to work alone, you should also be able to communicate with and participate in small group environments. Attention to detail is essential whilst planning and keeping sight of the bigger picture. You must be good at problem-solving with an ability to work to fixed deadlines.
Hours and Environment
Thirty-eight hours a week, Monday to Thursday 8.30 am to 5.30 pm (30-minute lunch) Friday 8.30 am to 12.30 pm.
21 days plus statutory bank holidays.
