Mechanical Design Engineer

We have an exciting new opportunity for an Mechanical Design Engineer interested in decarbonisation projects to join our Carbon Shift business unit.
Our Carbon Shift consulting business is focussed on the delivery of realisable climate action and net zero plans and is supported by delivery capability in heat decarbonisation, regeneration, Facilities Management, Project delivery, EV’s, smart buildings and renewables. Carbon Shift has developed a strong expertise and client base around net zero and energy transition and is now moving expand this offer into offering solutions to the broader climate adaptation and resilience challenge.
Key activities
The Mechanical Design Engineer to support the development of renewable heat and thermal energy efficiency projects. This role will focus on the engineering and design development of commercial heat pump applications, HVAC systems improvements and controls, working alongside electrical energy engineers and analysts to deliver low-carbon retrofit solutions.
* To prepare mechanical design solutions for retrofit decarbonisation projects, new-build energy centres and heat networks, taking RIBA 1 concepts to RIBA 4 technical design
* To prepare design models, utilising proprietary design software, such as AutoCAD, REVIT and Navisworks
* To prepare thermal energy simulation models, utilising proprietary software, such as IES VE, Hysopt and EnergyPRO (note work toward etc.)
* Prepare calculations and engineering analysis for the purpose of validating simulation models, confirming systems design requirements and performances
* Work within a multidisciplinary design team, collaborating with electrical, structural / civil, architectural, energy and specialist designers to produce coordinated designs
* Prepare design / functional specifications and contribute to tender scopes
* Lead / contribute to Design Stage Reports and associated customer-facing documents
* Undertake Designer Risk Assessments to identify and minimise health, safety and environmental risks associated with designs prepared
* With support from colleagues, understand and account for applicable statutory, regulatory and contractual requirements associated with design processes and outputs
* With support from colleagues, understand and account for physical and environmental constraints associated with design processes and outputs
* Where applicable, work alongside BIM specialists to provide relevant modelling/design information
* Undertake non-invasive engineering surveys to support design processes
Skills, qualifications & experience
* An advanced level of understanding of building services (mechanical) design
* Good knowledge of British Standards, design guides and the Building Regulations
* Competent in standard industry design software, including AutoCAD and REVIT
* A good understanding of legislation, regulations and standards applicable to HVAC design, ideally specific to low-carbon heating / cooling
* Aware of environmental, cultural and health and safety issues associated with the design of systems
* Able to prepare draft specifications, stage reports, tender documentation
* Aware of and follow quality assurance processes
* A good understanding of the integration of controls in HVAC and control strategies
* Knowledge of heat pumps and refrigeration technology application
* Understanding of environmental factors affecting mechanical design
* Aware of environmental, cultural and health and safety issues associated with the design of systems
* Able to prepare draft specifications, stage reports, tender documentation
* Competent in standard industry design software, including AutoCAD and REVIT
