About the Role:
We are seeking an experienced Mechanical Handling Engineer to support nuclear decommissioning and defence projects across key UK nuclear & defence sites. This role will involve the design, analysis, and implementation of mechanical handling systems, ensuring compliance with nuclear safety and regulatory requirements.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design and develop mechanical handling solutions for complex nuclear and defence projects.
- Produce detailed engineering documentation, including calculations, technical specifications, and reports.
- Conduct feasibility studies and risk assessments to ensure safe and effective handling solutions.
- Perform mechanical analysis, including stress, fatigue, and structural integrity assessments.
- Ensure designs comply with industry standards such as BS, EN, ASME, and nuclear-specific regulations.
- Liaise with multidisciplinary teams, including structural, electrical, and safety engineers, to deliver integrated solutions.
- Support the full project lifecycle, from concept design to commissioning and site implementation.
- Engage with stakeholders, including clients and regulatory bodies, to ensure alignment with project requirements.
- Provide technical support during manufacture, installation, and commissioning phases.
- Conduct design reviews and hazard identification (HAZID) assessments to mitigate project risks.
- Self-starter with site capability, able to deal with FOBs, commissioning team interface, etc.
Requirements:
- Degree-qualified in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
- Chartered Engineer status (CEng) or working towards it (IMechE ).
- Strong experience in mechanical handling systems, including cranes, lifting equipment, and remote handling technologies.
- Previous experience within the nuclear, defence, or highly regulated industries.
- Proficiency in engineering analysis tools (e.g., ANSYS, Mathcad) and 3D CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Inventor).
- Working knowledge of nuclear safety case principles and relevant engineering standards.
- Familiarity with Sellafield and other UK nuclear/defence sites would be highly advantageous.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within project teams.
- Strong communication skills to engage with stakeholders at all levels.
