Mechanical Engineering | Physics Internship (non-thesis): Multi-Phase Model Evaporation and Optimization

IntroductionAre you a master student in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or Physics, looking for an apprentice internship? Are you specializing in fluid dynamics? Are you skilled in Computational Fluid dynamics (CFD) tooling?Would you like to apply your theoretical knowledge in a real world setting and gain some practical experience? Then this apprenticeship might be interesting to you! Background informationASML is the world's leading provider of lithography systems for the semiconductor industry, manufacturing complex machines that are critical to the production of integrated circuits or chips. ASML Twinscan NXT immersion lithography machines use water between silicon wafer and the final lens element to improve the optical resolution.Your assignmentThe aim of this project is to develop a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model. You will analyze evaporation behavior of liquid films, as well as the fluid mechanics of a water extraction system, combining two-phase flow, evaporation, capillary and pressure driven microfluidics. The geometry of the model is a small section of the extraction system around the wafer. This geometry includes features that make mesh generation a challenging work. This also means that microfluidic effects such as dynamic contact angle behavior, film formation and droplet formation need to be captured by implementing the required physics. The simulation methods developed then may be used for optimization and parametric studies to guide the product design processes within ASML.Some of your tasks may include:Perform a review of the available models;Based on a well-informed decision, develop a CFD model;Support your work with proper documentation;Perform simulation data analysis and provide quantitative data;Validate the CFD model with respect to the test data (wet pattern over time, drying out time, thermal load, etc.);Your profileTo be a match for this assignment, you:Are busy with your master's in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or Physics; Are specializing in fluid dynamics; Are skilled in tooling like CFD(STARCCM+, COMSOL, OPENFOAM, BASILISK, etc.) (a plus); Are solution oriented and have a hands-on mentality;Have good communication skills in English (verbal and written). This is an apprentice internship for 4-5 days a week with a duration of 5-6 months. The start date is around mid-October.Please note that we can only consider students who are enrolled at a school for the entire duration of the internship.
