The Medical Laboratory Scientist will engage in advanced sample processing, microbiology, equipment uses, maintenance, troubleshooting, submission of quality control data, and point tech duties, including data form creation and review. The Medical Laboratory Scientist will refine skills in the areas of attention to detail, problem-solving, and communication as they begin to mentor and train Medical Laboratory Technicians. This is an exempt role with no supervisory responsibility.
Role Responsibilities
- Determine the acceptability of samples for testing according to established criteria.
- Advanced sample processing for blood, urine, cerebrospinal fluid, and other specimens in accordance with SOPs and/or Sponsor requirements.
- Monitor and operate instrumentation, including chemistry, hematology, coagulation, and urine analyzers.
- Notify vet staff of clinically significant results.
- Preventative maintenance and quality control of all analyzers
- Collect and record data both on paper and electronically in a laboratory management system in accordance with Good Laboratory Practices (GLP).
- Study protocol review.
- Data review for GLP compliance
- Basic point technician duties, including study book preparation and collection.
- Generate and verify accountabilities and sample manifests.
- Pack samples for shipment.
- Refrigerator and freezer mapping qualifications
- Submit quality control data.
- Basic microbiological setup and testing of samples.
- Train and mentor Medical Laboratory Assistants
- Assist in providing scientific guidance to Study Directors
- Other duties as assigned
Role Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in relevant discipline required.
- ASCP or AMT certification required.
- Minimum 2 years of medical laboratory experience .
- Excellent written and oral communication.
- Advanced understanding of study design and operational procedures
- Knowledge of GLP and other federal regulations relating to the care of laboratory animals.
- Ability to work effectively and independently under time constraints

Special Requirements
- This role works predominantly in a laboratory. There will be exposure to human and animal pathogens and chemicals. There will be handling of and/or exposure to animal tissues and zoonotic organisms.
- Ability to don and wear personal protective gear, including N95 masks and respirators.
- Physical Requirements: Ability to lift and carry up to 50lbs.
- Ability to work beyond typical work schedule including evenings, weekends, and extended shifts with short notice.
