The Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) is responsible for performing laboratory tests and procedures in accordance with established protocols, ensuring accurate and timely results. The MLT supports healthcare providers by preparing and analyzing patient specimens, maintaining laboratory equipment, and managing laboratory documentation. Assists management in monitoring quality control data to ensure results or procedures are accurate and precise.
Key Accountabilities:
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Actively participates in monitoring the section’s quality control.
- Perform laboratory tests on patient specimens including blood, urine, and other biological samples.
- Operate laboratory equipment, troubleshoot issues, and ensure proper maintenance and calibration of instruments.
- Record and analyze test results, ensuring accuracy and reporting discrepancies to supervisors.
- Prepare samples for testing, following established protocols to ensure the integrity of specimens.
- Maintain laboratory records and manage data entry into Electronic Health Records (EHR) and laboratory information systems.
- Ensure adherence to safety guidelines, infection control protocols, and regulations regarding biohazards.
- Assist in preparing laboratory reagents, chemicals, and equipment.
- Participate in quality control activities, including routine maintenance and validation of tests.
- Communicate test results and findings to healthcare providers as appropriate.
- Assist with inventory management, ordering supplies, and ensuring laboratory areas are clean and organized.
- Participate in continuing education to stay current with laboratory techniques and procedures.
Performance Requirements:
Knowledge:
- General knowledge of laboratory testing, procedures, and safety regulations.
- Familiarity with quality control and quality assurance standards in laboratory settings.
- Knowledge of regulatory standards (e.g., CLIA, OSHA, COLA) related to laboratory operations.
Skills:
- Strong attention to detail, ensuring accuracy in test results and documentation.
- Proficient in using laboratory equipment, including microscopes, analyzers, and automated systems.
- Skilled in data entry and maintaining laboratory information systems.
- Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting abilities.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills for reporting and collaborating with healthcare providers.
- Ability to handle multiple tasks in a busy laboratory environment.
- Good organizational and time management skills.
- Ability to maintain patient confidentiality and adhere to HIPAA regulations.
- Excellent customer service skills and the ability to work effectively with patients and healthcare team members.
Requirements:
Education/Experience:
Required:
- High school diploma or General Educational Development (GED)
- Associates degree in applied science or Clinical Laboratory Science from an accredited college with completion of an accredited Medical Laboratory Technician program.
- Certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) by a recognized certifying agency (e.g., ASCP, AMT).

- Experience with laboratory information systems (LIS) and Electronic Health Records (EHR).
- Experience with a wide range of laboratory tests and procedures in clinical settings.
- Phlebotomy certification or experience.
- Experience working in a rural healthcare setting or with underserved populations.
- At least 1-2 years of experience in a clinical laboratory setting.
Physical Requirements:
- Full range of motion and manual dexterity, including the ability to handle laboratory equipment and specimens.
- Ability to stand for long periods and lift and carry items up to 50 pounds.
- Frequent exposure to communicable diseases, biohazards, toxic substances, and other conditions common to a clinical laboratory environment.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, managing multiple tasks simultaneously.
Work Environment:
- Laboratory setting with moderate to high noise levels from equipment and machinery.
- Fast-paced work environment with frequent deadlines and varying levels of patient volume.
- Some travel between facilities within the Appalachian Mountain Health system may be required.
