We are seeking an experienced and transformational Planning Manager to join our innovative and award-winning Planning Service to take forward our Development Management team.

Derbyshire is one of the Country’s leading producers of minerals and the extraction of Derbyshire mineral resources bring significant benefits to both the local and national economy. Some of the country’s largest quarries are in Derbyshire that produce a range of minerals. The Planning Service works closely with the industry through the development management process, particularly working to achieve added value outcomes for the community and environment.

The County’s central location mean that it is well placed to serve the waste industry, which has seen this sector investing in cutting edge technology within Derbyshire to help grow the circular economy for waste materials.

The County Council has an ambitious programme of investment and the Planning Service through its development management function plays an important role in considering future infrastructure such as schools, cycle routes, new roads and bridges.

Key responsibilities of this role are:

  • Work shoulder-to-shoulder with the Assistant Director in steering Planning Services, ensuring that our service delivery aligns seamlessly with our ambitions for Derbyshire.
  • Uphold the Council’s reputation by supporting the Assistant Director in fulfilling our obligations as the Local Planning Authority.
  • You'll be at the forefront of sculpting an efficient and effective Regulatory Service, emphasising robust performance, budgeting, and fostering a culture of perpetual improvement.
  • You'll be the guiding force for a dedicated professional team. Oversee the Development Management and Enforcement functions to reflect our principles of excellence and commitment.

What skills and experience do you need to have:

  • Experience in leading and growing diverse teams, understanding their strengths, and assigning roles that match their expertise.
  • Capability to articulate complex planning issues to a variety of stakeholders ranging from senior managers, elected members, the industry to the
  • Demonstrated leadership within a multi-service planning department.
  • Expertise in preparing and overseeing work programmes focused on Development Management functions.
  • A relevant degree or diploma granting eligibility for full membership of the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI).

Our Planning Team has offices in Matlock, Derbyshire, but we work on a flexible basis which includes options for home working.
