Location
This is a hybrid (virtual/onsite) position with minimal onsite days on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday assigned to Parnall located in Jackson, MI. The selected candidate must be within a commutable distance from this location or willing to relocate (relocation package available to those who qualify).
General Summary of Job Responsibilities
The Substation Standards and Materials Team is responsible for the development and maintenance of all Consumers Energy's electric substation standards, specifications, materials, and large and major equipment procurement for all low- and high-voltage electric distribution substations. This position is an individual contributor with no direct reports and reports directly to the Substation Standards and Materials Senior Engineering Manager.
The Principal Civil Engineer is a specialist in design, planning, and oversight for the construction of infrastructure complex projects. These can include renovation and construction of varying structures such as buildings, dams, pipelines, etc. The principal civil engineer will be the point of contact and responsible for ensuring department projects are completed on time, within budget, and to the highest standards. They will lead a team of engineers and technicians on moderately complex projects, delegating work and responsibilities to lower-level engineers.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The Principal Civil Engineer will support the ongoing maintenance and development of our electric substation civil/structural standard drawings and specifications and continue investigating and developing new civil/structural standards and specifications to address emerging technologies and materials. They must be capable of designing and reviewing substation foundations and structural steel to maintain our electric substation standards and specifications. They will be a technical specialist in the structural and civil design elements to promote standardization, reliability and resilience. They shall have an advanced understanding of industry codes, standards, and industry trends, along with extensive knowledge of material being used on the electric distribution system. They will address time sensitive problems with adequate solutions to maintain the safety and reliability of the electric system. Additionally, they will be integrated with managing material/procurement issues and developing solutions to field-related concerns.
Assesses strength of foundations, concrete, asphalt, or steel by testing materials and soil using appropriate methods to ensure safe modifications/building. Perform fieldwork and data collection as necessary and undertake fieldwork when required, such as soil testing and surveying
Consults with and provides guidance to project stakeholders and managerial staff regarding engineering requirements for construction of various designs, modifications, and structural repairs
Sets design specifications by computing load and grade requirements, material stress factors, flow rates, and similar parameters. Comply with all relevant legislation, codes of practice, and professional standards
Additional Duties and Responsibilities
Uses design software and drawing tools to accurately render and communicate designs; plans and designs other necessary and related systems and structures such as transportation or hydraulics. Prepares feasibility studies, reports, designs, calculations, cost estimates, construction schedules, and other technical documentation
Collaborates with internal coworkers, architects, contractors, surveyors to establish installations or reference points, grades, elevations, and other factors that will affect construction & to ensure projects progress properly
Drafts and presents reports on topics related to projects such as environmental impact statements and right-of-way descriptions that adhere to all local, state, and federal codes and regulations
Estimates materials, equipment, and labor needed to determine project costs. Prepare proposals, reports, specifications, calculations, and other deliverables as required
Monitors project progress and ensures design specifications, safety, and sanitation standards are met; upon completion of a project, inspects, repairs, and maintains the structures as needed
Plans projects based on the analysis of relevant materials such as drawings, blueprints, aerial photography, survey reports, maps, and other geologic and topographical data
Other duties as assigned or may be necessary
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

Ability to be both creative and analytical

Proficient in AutoCAD, Civil 3D, or similar software
Thorough understanding of civil engineering principles, practices, and tools
Thorough understanding of materials, methods, and tools involved in the construction or repair of buildings, pipelines, and other related structures
Detail-oriented and accurate
Thorough understanding of safety regulations related to assigned projects
Verbal and written communication skills
Education & Experience
Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited program with seven (7) or more years of applicable engineering experience

Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from a non-ABET accredited program plus a Professional Engineering license with seven (7) or more years of applicable engineering experience
