Langham Recruitment are supporting a leading optics and photonics organisation in their search for a Principal Photonics Engineer to join their team in Torquay.

Key Responsibilities:
Design and develop cutting-edge fibre-optic and photonic components and devices using advanced design tools and experimental testing methods.
Enhance and innovate fused fibre-optic coupler products.
Contribute to a unified product development strategy aligned with business growth objectives.
Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of mechanical, electronic, and product engineers, as well as technicians.
Participate hands-on in prototype development, including operating fusion rigs, fibre-optic splicing, mechanical/electrical assembly, and opto-electronic testing.
Create and implement test plans for functional and environmental qualification of components for high-reliability applications.
Support design modifications and engineering changes for existing products.Requirements
Degree in Engineering or Physics (PhD in a relevant field is highly desirable).
Strong understanding of optical fibres and their properties, including SM, PM, MM, PCF, and Multi-Core fibres.
Hands-on experience with glass processing techniques, such as fibre optic tapering and fusion.
Deep knowledge of fibre-optics, photonics, and related material properties.
Exceptional problem-solving skills with the ability to tackle complex technical and material challenges.
Expertise in optical testing processes and equipment for optical fibres.
Familiarity with reliability concerns for optical fibres and components, including proof testing, aging under harsh conditions, crack growth, and wear-out modelling (e.g., FIT rates).
Experience designing high-yield, reliable, and high-performance engineering processes.
Well-organized, detail-oriented, and able to meet tight deadlines.
