Job Description

AbbVie is looking for talented Protein Biochemists with strong Protein Sciences expertise to join our team at our headquarters in the Chicago area. This exciting role is central to advancing small molecule drug discovery across a variety of disease areas using innovative biochemical strategies. As an integral member of our team, you will drive projects and collaborate across functions to develop robust and scalable protein workflows and address strategic questions in support of key drug discovery activities, including assay development, screening, structure-based design, and exploratory biology.
Success in this position requires a solid foundation and proven track record in Protein biochemistry and related fields, good understanding and applications of computational protein design tools, and strong collaborative skills.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Innovate and lead experimental plans to address essential questions about protein functions and overcome challenges in generating protein /protein complexes with low yield, aggregation issues.
  • Enhance and implement best practices in protein expression, purification, and characterization to support drug discovery programs.
  • Design complex protein constructs and guide purification processes to enable cutting-edge biochemical/biophysical assays and structural biology research.
  • Serve as the technical expert in protein production, utilizing advanced chromatographic techniques on AKTA systems.
  • Effectively use of advanced computational tools and the development of novel approaches to strengthen our program capabilities.
  • Work closely with project teams to identify and solve key questions within the domain of protein biochemistry.
  • Stay ahead of scientific discoveries to integrate valuable insights into evolving protein engineering strategies.
  • Lead cross-functional teams, driving biochemistry-focused initiatives that enhance program success.

Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Biophysics, Bioinformatics, or a related field, with 6+ years of relevant experience.
  • Proven expertise in producing high-quality proteins and addressing challenges with complex context.
  • Proficiency in programming and the application of comprehensive bioinformatics tools, and computational biology technologies would be a plus.
  • A deep understanding of best practices in the field of membrane protein would be beneficial.
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills, coupled with an independent and detail-oriented approach to problem-solving.
  • Strong project management skills, with the ability to lead and contribute to multiple simultaneous projects.
  • Outstanding collaborative and communication skills, adaptable to both computational and non-computational scientific audiences.
