Process Engineer

Our client is actively seeking a Process Engineer to join their team out of their location in Raleigh, North Carolina! This individual would be responsible for optimizing, designing and implementing processes related to the production of renewable natural gas, clean water, and high-value soil additives. This is a full time, permanent opportunity with a leading renewable natural gas (RNG) engineering company that promotes sustainable practices within the energy space!

We are looking for an experienced and passionate Process Engineer to join our Client’s team and support their growing projects that focus on RNG production from organic waste and wastewater.


Job Description: As a Process Engineer you will be responsible for optimizing, designing, and implementing processes related to the production of renewable natural gas, clean water, and high-value soil additives. This position will involve working closely with multidisciplinary teams, ensuring the successful execution of projects from concept through to implementation. You will use your expertise to drive improvements in efficiency, sustainability, and safety while adhering to project timelines and budgets.
Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the design, optimization, and scaling of RNG production processes from organic waste and wastewater.
  • Provide process engineering expertise in project development, including feasibility studies, process simulations, and cost-benefit analyses.
  • Oversee the integration of technologies related to anaerobic digestion, gas upgrading, water treatment, and nutrient recovery.
  • Conduct process modeling and simulations using advanced engineering tools to optimize system performance.
  • Lead troubleshooting and process improvement efforts, addressing operational challenges related to gas production, water treatment, and byproduct management.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams (operations, construction, environmental, safety) to ensure seamless project execution.
  • Develop and maintain detailed process documentation, including flow diagrams, mass balances, and equipment specifications.
  • Support the selection and procurement of equipment, ensuring it meets operational and safety standards.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, environmental standards, and industry best practices.
  • Manage the performance and commissioning of new technologies and plant modifications.
  • Mentor and train junior engineers and other technical staff, fostering a culture of continuous learning and development.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering (or a related engineering discipline) is required.
  • 7-10+ years of experience in process engineering, ideally within the renewable energy, biogas, wastewater treatment, or related sectors.
  • Strong expertise in process design, optimization, and modeling related to anaerobic digestion, gas upgrading, water treatment, and nutrient recovery systems.
  • In-depth knowledge of process engineering tools, including process simulation software (Aspen Plus, HYSYS, etc.), process flow diagrams, and mass balance techniques.
  • Demonstrated experience with large-scale renewable energy or environmental projects, ideally with a focus on RNG or biogas production.
  • Familiarity with regulatory standards and environmental laws, including local and federal regulations related to RNG production.
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams, manage projects, and drive results within deadlines and budget constraints.
  • Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and troubleshooting skills.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to convey technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering or related field.
  • Experience with environmental impact assessments, permitting processes, and sustainability metrics.
  • Knowledge of emerging technologies in RNG production and water treatment.
  • Professional engineering licensure (PE) is a plus.
