Job Summary
The Project Engineer is responsible for engineering-related activities associated with power facilities. This role provides technical support, develops long-term plans and budgets, and manages capital and O&M projects to enhance equipment performance and plant efficiency. The ideal candidate should have strong project management skills, technical expertise, and interpersonal abilities to collaborate with plant personnel, Southern Company Services (SCS), vendors, and contractors.
Key Responsibilities Plant Technical Support & Project Management
- Provide outage and project management, including budget management and long-term maintenance strategies.
- Develop and justify 5- & 10-year capital budgets for associated capital projects.
- Utilize business tools to develop budgets, write work orders, purchase equipment and materials, and create project schedules.
- Monitor system performance and analyze equipment failures, initiating root cause analysis studies.
Collaboration & Communication
- Work with Southern Company Services (SCS), OEMs, and system owners at other plants to stay informed of upgrades or concerns affecting the plant.
- Communicate plant needs and recommendations to plant management, corporate leadership, and peer groups.
- Represent Southern Company's interests in vendor and contractor discussions.
Qualifications & Requirements Education
- B.S. in Engineering from an ABET-accredited institution required.
- M.S. in Business or Engineering is a plus.
- Professional Engineer (PE) License is .
Experience
- 3 - 5 years of experience in an industrial facility or in support of industrial operations, with a focus on project or design work.
- Hands-on experience in maintenance and performance analysis of equipment, including:
- Pumps/motors
- Air/motor-operated valves
- Fans, condensers, and boilers
- Turbines, switchgear, circuit breakers, and transformers
- Project management experience required.
- Strong understanding of power plant processes and equipment.
- Experience in equipment and system performance testing & analysis is a plus.
Skills & Abilities
- Strong organizational, time management, and analytical skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and changing priorities effectively.
- Knowledge of computer software applications with the ability to learn new systems quickly.
- Self-motivated and proactive, demonstrating strong initiative.
- Ability to build relationships with vendors, contractors, and subject matter experts.
- Effective conflict resolution skills and ability to work within a diverse team.
- Willingness to take on multiple roles as required to support plant needs.
Additional Details
- Must be available to work nights, weekends, and holidays as needed.
- Some extended work hours may be required.
- Must be on-call for the plant on a rotational basis (one-week assignments).
- Minimal travel required (approximately 10%).
