Job Description

Olsson’s Power Delivery team is seeking an Associate Electrical Engineer – Protection & Controls who is eager to gain experience in both field work and design review. In this role, you will support on-site protection and control efforts, review issued-for-construction (IFC) drawing packages and collaborate closely with clients on substation projects.

We are looking for an engineer who thrives in both office and field environments, is comfortable with critical analysis of design changes, and understands safety, hazard conditions, and real-time problem-solving in the field. This is a great opportunity to develop hands-on expertise in substation protection and controls while working alongside experienced engineers.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support field review and implementation of Protection & Controls Issued For Construction (IFC) drawing packages.
  • Conduct on-site evaluations of substation protection systems, ensuring compliance with design and safety standards.
  • Assist in troubleshooting, problem-solving, and design modifications during project execution.
  • Perform basic calculations, relay coordination studies, and protection settings with guidance from senior engineers.
  • Develop and review engineering drawings, schematics, and wiring diagrams using AutoCAD, MicroStation, or similar tools.
  • Ensure compliance with NERC, IEEE, and utility-specific protection and control standards.
  • Collaborate with clients and internal teams to review and implement design updates in real time.
  • Participate in site visits and field-testing activities, gaining direct experience in substation commissioning and protection systems.

You bring to the team:

  • Strong communication skills.

  • Excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills.
  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering.
  • 1+ years of experience in electrical engineering.
  • Engineer (EI) certificate
  • Ability to work in both office and field environments (travel required for site visits).
  • Familiarity with electrical safety, hazard identification, and substation design principles.
  • Basic knowledge of protection & controls, relay coordination, and substation automation ().
  • Experience with design software (AutoCAD, MicroStation, ETAP, or SKM is a plus).
