PROTOTYPE ENGINEERING MANAGER

Prototype Development Manager (fibre Optic)

BACKGROUND

The company design, develop and manufacture a range of systems, subsystems and complex componentry that are used in a wide range of applications including semiconductor electronics, telecoms, optical devices, ruggedised systems and switches.

The innovation they utilise in design and production as well as their future product mapping sets them aside as from other similar organisations#

They manufacture fibre optics systems and solutions, the use of cutting edge materials and production processes help the company keep pace with leading technology

ROLE

The role purpose is to ensure the design, development, testing (leading to production) operate effectively, to deadlines and industry required standards through hand on project and development skills and through the management of the team

You will be involved in the development of a fully optical/material and fibre optic system for the aerospace, defence industries and industrial applications for ruggedised equipment

Manage the scope, progress and resources of several work packages within the complex development program.

Use technical expertise in mechanical and material engineering to develop prototype equipment

Work on future materials and design of the system within budget and within tight timelines.

A typical project would consist of a requirement coming in from sales to the design team. The design team with develop drawings (Creo) for a prototype. Then you will liaise with design understanding the materials required to develop and produce the prototype. The project will then run from the design, development test and manufacture of the prototype right through to delivery to the customer.

If the prototype is accepted then this is then handed over to manufacturing for mass production, if there is redesign required then this is fed back into the development phase and the process is repeated until customer acceptance and thus to manufacturing, most of this work is mechanical/material based

A very significant percentage of the role will be product development engineering and you will be running your own projects, making sure the projects are run effectively, to deadlines and adhere to the required standards

You will also champion and lead the company's future products technology road map to ensure the groups solutions stay at the forefront of industry, developing testing new product to guarantee keeping their market position.

As well as the above a strong and effective communication channel up and down must be maintained, particularly with manufacturing and top management conveying progress on the various projects, the team, and future programmes.

PERSON

You will require a significant amount of experience which will include a large amount of product development and or prototype development (such as development engineering, test engineering etc) and strong exposure to mechanical testing, materials or fibre optic development, sensors, probes or, semi-conductor products.

Experience within the fibre optic manufacturing industry, whether through testing, development or prototyping.

A materials background with testing and development in a production environment would also suit

Supervise / Manage, coach, and support a team - design, development, test, and process engineers and technicians

Coordinate your team to ensure all project timelines and budgets are met

Work closely with manufacturing, procurement, and sales for new product delivery
