Pump Station Technician

Position Description:

· Troubleshoots mechanical and hydraulic failures within water resource facilities and collection pump stations.

· Monitors SCADA alarm system 24/7 while on-call and performs on-call duties after hours as necessary.

· Records water resource facility operational information including flow rates, runtimes, starts and pressures.

· Operates and maintains water resource facility infrastructure through preventative maintenance and repairs in order to achieve high quality wastewater standards.

· Performs perpetual and preventative maintenance on pump stations, collection/transmission systems, and water resource recovery facility appurtenances including valves, ball checks, flow meters, ARV’s, pumps, piping, fencing, etc.

· Inspects, maintains, and repairs equipment at water resource facilities for proper function and safety compliance.

· Performs routine and emergency confined space work to include wet wells, manholes, valve pits and tanks.

· Understands how to operate heavy equipment including mini excavators, large crane trucks and jetting/vacuum truck and forklifts.

· Provides emergency support and power for pump stations, connects backup generators as primary responders in storms, outages, hurricanes and other inclement weather conditions.

· Provides information for monthly, quarterly, and yearly reports via Computerized Maintenance Management System (Maximo) and condition assessments.

· Repairs, replaces, and constructs water resource facility appurtenances including pipe, valves, and fittings above ground and during confined space entries.

· Assists with cleaning wastewater lines, wet wells and tanks

· Inspects and maintains Commission vehicles, equipment and pump stations for safety compliance.

· Performs maintenance pertaining to pump station conversions, including but not limited, to pump replacement, building demolition, piping removal/installation, and concrete/asphalt work.

· Creates and resolves work orders in the Maximo database describing work completed, manpower utilized, materials, equipment and establishes follow-up work orders as needed.

· Serves as a customer liaison for grinder pump service calls.

· Communicates with supervisors, employees, other departments, customers, engineers, inspectors, contractors, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, and resolve problems.

· Maintains tools, equipment and vehicles in optimal condition.

· Occasional night work for emergencies and scheduled tasks.

· Performs mechanical maintenance at water resource facilities as needed.

· Records a variety of data into the Laboratory Information System (LIMS), obtain daily samples for lab analysis as needed.

· Prepares truck and tools for job tasks.

· Supports other department such as Wastewater Lines, Service Line Care, Operations, Electrical, Engineering, Water Distribution, Water Quality and Site Restoration.

· Maintains cleanliness of Commission vehicles, shop and stockyard.

· Works with contractors on new pump stations and upgrades.

· Performs other related duties as required, such as general landscaping of pump stations and ground/building maintenance (i.e. cutting trees, pruning trees, mowing grass, weed eating, application of control chemicals, painting, carpentry work, etc.).

· Performs related duties as required.

Minimum Requirements:

· Position requires a high school diploma or GED; supplemented by vocational/technical training and/or one (1) to two (2) years experience in mechanical, electrical, and hydraulics; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities for this job.

· Must possess and maintain a valid South Carolina Driver’s License.

· Must possess a Wastewater Collection License – Level D (within one year of hire date), a Wastewater Collection License – Level C (within two years of hire date), a Biological Wastewater Treatment License – Level D (within one year of hire date), and a Confined Space Entry Certification (within one year of hire date).

· Position also requires a strong mechanical/technical aptitude to effectively perform troubleshooting to determine appropriate repairs and to complete appropriate repairs.

· Computer skills are required that allow basic understanding of internet research for parts manuals and breakdowns, Microsoft applications, Maximo, SCADA, payroll software and GIS mapping.

· Skilled in oral, written and electronic communication with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, coworkers, and the public.

· Ability to utilize and read specialty tools (micrometers, calipers, dial indicators, pyrometers, torque wrenches, grab samples, dissolved oxygen measurement, chlorine analyzers).

· Basic knowledge of Programmable Logic Controllers and Variable Frequency Drives is also required.
