Research Associate in Materials Science and Engineering

The Center for Electrochemical Science and Engineering in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Virginia seeks a Post-Doctoral Research Associate to work in the Environmental Fatigue and Fracture Group. The focus of the research will be environmental fatigue and fracture of high strength metallic alloys; specific programs will likely include corrosion‐fatigue and inhibition of high strength aerospace Al alloys, mechanisms of environmental cracking in high temperature applications, mechanistic studies of H embrittlement, stress corrosion cracking of nickel based super‐alloys, SCC and fatigue of sensitized 5xxx series alloys, environment‐sensitive pit‐to‐crack transition in high strength alloys, environmental cracking of AM components, and next generation characterization of localized damage controlling the failure process. The applicant would be expected to interact with graduate students, perform fracture mechanics testing, post‐test SEM fractography, data analysis, and contribute to publications particularly from the micromechanics and plasticity elements of environmental cracking. The following experience is preferred: operating computer-controlled servo‐hydraulic testing equipment; familiarity with the field of environmental fatigue and fracture and H‐embrittlement; familiarity with fracture mechanics concepts, both experimental and crack tip damage modeling; experience with characterization techniques to gather and interpret failure; strong oral and written communication skills; and the ability to interact collegially with undergraduate and graduate students. This is a particularly good opportunity for an experimental fracture mechanics person to grow with regard to environmental effects and characterization techniques, as supported by our very large‐broad effort which is centered on structural metals and ongoing in the UVa Center for Electrochemical Science and Engineering.QUALIFICATIONS: A Ph.D. degree in Materials Science and Engineering, with preference for those with a thesis dissertation with emphasis on environmental effects on fatigue and fracture behavior. Also required are evidence of good written and oral English language skills to interact with various sponsors, experience with high fidelity characterization techniques, attention to detail, good record keeping, and strong analytical skillsAPPLICATION DEADLINE: Review of applications will begin on April 8, 2022, but the position will remain open until filled. The University will perform background checks on all new hires prior to employment. This is a one-year appointment, and the appointment may be renewed contingent upon available funding and satisfactory performance. For more information on the benefits available to postdoctoral associates at UVA, visit postdoc.virginia.edu and hr.virginia.edu/benefits.COVID Vaccination Requirement and GuidelinesPlease visit the UVA COVID-19 Job Requirements and Guidelines webpage prior to applying for current information regarding vaccination requirements and guidelines for employment at UVA.The University of Virginia, including the UVA Health System which represents the UVA Medical Center, Schools of Medicine and Nursing, UVA Physician’s Group and the Claude Moore Health Sciences Library, are fundamentally committed to the diversity of our faculty and staff.
