Job DescriptionJob DescriptionSummaryThe Reserve Deputy assists Patrol Deputies and Marine Patrol Deputies in enforcing state criminal laws, traffic laws, administrative rules, and county ordinances. Distinguishing Characteristics This is a volunteer position that collaborates with other law enforcement personnel in the protection of life and property. Reserve Deputies work varying shifts, including special events, holidays and weekends. Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Detects and investigates criminal activity, apprehends suspects, and deters crime.
  • Maintains accurate records and prepares detailed reports promptly.
  • Assists the public by providing information on County and State regulations, ordinances, laws, and rules.
  • Reports for duty punctually at the designated time and location and properly uniformed and equipped.
  • Monitors dispatch communications and follows all supervisor-issued orders.
  • Familiarizes themselves with the County, including bus routes, streets, public buildings, landmarks, courthouses, transportation hubs, and jurisdictional boundaries.
  • Reports hazards such as leaking pipes, gas mains, broken streetlights, downed power lines, malfunctioning traffic signals, or other public nuisances.
  • Remains visible while on duty, except when assigned to investigative duties.
  • Maintains situational awareness, remaining vigilant for fires, public disturbances, and offenses against persons or property.
  • Displays a badge and nameplate while in uniform and provides identification when requested.
  • Demonstrates strong verbal, written, and arithmetic skills necessary for effective report writing and courtroom testimony.
  • Carries an identification card and a valid Oregon Driver’s License while on duty.
  • Meets the performance standards established by the Sheriff.
  • Must be available to testify in Court when necessary.
  • Regular attendance is an essential function of the position.
  • Performs other duties as assigned that support the overall objective of the position.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge and Skills
    • Comprehensive knowledge of state and local laws, ordinances, regulations, and policies. Must have strong report-writing and organizational skills. Must have excellent communication and listening skills.
  • Abilities
    • Communicates effectively, both verbally and in writing. Must be able to establish good working relationships with co-workers, other agencies, and departments.
  • Physical Abilities
    • Must be 21 years old. Possesses the necessary hand-eye coordination to operate law enforcement equipment, weapons, and vehicles. Demonstrates visual acuity sufficient for performing essential tasks, including discrimination. Capable of walking and standing for extended periods and physically subduing combative individuals. Exhibits the speech and auditory capabilities required to communicate effectively in various environments, including large crowds. Sufficient hand/eye coordination to operate a computer keyboard and recognize words and numbers, and other abilities as prescribed by the Board of Public Safety Standards and Training. Must be free of any physical, emotional or mental condition that may affect job performance.
  • Education and Experience
    • Minimum of a High School Diploma (Associate or bachelor’s degree in criminal justice or similar discipline ) and demonstrate considerable reasoning skill. Must have prior reserve experience and have either completed an Oregon Reserve Academy within the last five years or a prior full-time Patrol Deputy within the past five years, with documented proof
  • Licenses and certificates
    • A valid Oregon Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record.
  • Working Conditions
    • Work is performed indoors and outdoors where some safety considerations exist from physical labor and handling of light-to-medium weight, yet awkward materials.
  • Probationary Requirement
    • This position is based on the successful completion of a twelve-month probationary period.


CANDIDATES MUST have prior reserve experience, graduated from Oregon Reserve Academy within the last 5 years and/or have prior full-time law enforcement experience within the last 5 years with documented proof.
