Job Title: Sr. Chemical Engineer
Job Summary: Alsym Energy is looking for a self-driven and motivated engineer with a passion in the field of energy storage. In this position, the candidate will have an opportunity to drive rapid and innovative advancements in materials and processes for next-generation energy storage systems. The successful candidate will be responsible for active R&D efforts and will work closely with a team of engineers and scientists to deliver products with demanding performance requirements.
Industry Background: Energy storage systems is a rapidly emerging field. Over the last few years, supply-chain constraints and significant safety incidents arising from lithium-ion batteries globally have resulted in a dramatic increase in costs and reduced confidence in the reliability of the technology. Alsym is working on an exciting proprietary aqueous battery technology that is expected to compete with state-of-the-art lithium-ion batteries while offering the technology at a fraction of the cost and with inherent non-flammability.
Key Qualifications:
- BS in Chemical Engineering, or a related field.
- 8+ years industry experience with demonstrated success in equipment commissioning, process development, and chemical scale-up operations.
- Familiarity with industrial separations equipment and processes (filtration systems, centrifugation) is highly preferred.
- Familiarity with industrial powder equipment (sieves, spray driers, milling) is highly preferred.
- Hands-on individual capable of debugging process/equipment issues but also able to delegate to others and contractors.
- Familiarity with standard battery production processes and equipment, such as slot-die coaters, slurry handling equipment, etc. is a plus but not required.
- Knowledge about facility design and planning for pilot-scale operations is required.
- Competency with engineering software tools is a plus (Floorplan layout tools etc.)
Roles & Responsibilities:
- Responsible for the scale-up effort of manufacturing processes of active materials
- Lead the sizing, purchasing and commissioning of prototype manufacturing equipment
- Manage the maintenance of all pilot equipment, with help from others and service contractors
- Own the design and layout of current and future manufacturing facilities
- Work alongside engineers/scientists to develop process control plans, SOPs, schedules and any necessary documentation needed for the definition of a mature manufacturing process
- Conduct hands-on experiments in the lab using prototype materials to guide the scale-up efforts
